How can you identify social commentary in art?

Identifying social commentary in art requires us to be both viewer and viewee. Here's what I mean. Before we can truly delve into the historical, cultural, and personal context of an artist, we must surmise the lens through which we view. As a cross-cultural sensitivity consultant many years ago I developed a framework I called Cultureprints. Just as we each have fingerprints that are unique to us, we have Cultureprints that are, as well. Our Cultureprints are made up of the total of our history, geographical & familial connections, socioeconomics, etc. Once we understand our own Cultureprint, we can genuinely explore what an artist brings to the table in the art that they create, and the social commentary that is put forth through it.

I would disagree to have "Know the context" as a number one point. Let yourself be drawn to what you like. Do not be afraid to like or to dislike art. Don't feel that you need to know something about the art or the artist. Escape the time factor. If you want to look? Look.

As a cultural theoretician, I can express my opinions on social or political issues using this tool as a social commentary for criticism.

One thing I have found helpful, especially in identifying social commentary in art, is to see how it relates to me and my immediate world. Art is subjective but if I can see myself in it and through it, even the tiniest bit of me, it brings me a lot closer.

Certainly, an effective approach in examining visual elements is to identify defining artifacts within the artwork. Analyzing specific details like recurring symbols, focal points, or unique stylistic elements can offer valuable insights into the artist's intended message and thematic choices. These defining artifacts serve as critical clues to dissect the layers of meaning and emotion embedded in the artistic composition.

Also, I think that carefully analyzing the arts subject matter, imagery and symbolism one might be able to detect elements that reflects or challenge societal norms or portray the struggles and triumphs of marginalized groups.

When analyzing how elements of art have been used within a particular piece, also look out for use of exaggerated proportionality. Is anything or anyone disproportionately big or small etc... Such incongruence is often used to subtly or not-so-subtly lead the viewer to a breadcrumb clue about the message being conveyed.

Symbolism is a language unto itself and goes alongside allegory and innuendo. A picture tells a thousand words, but symbolism tells epics. To read it requires lateral thinking. Kind of knock on effects, but in reverse as well as forwards and sideways. Reading it is a useful skill in real life as well.

Judge what the work means to you (the onlooker) not what you think the artist is saying. You have entered the space that the art occupies be that for an instant or longer. The artwork exists in the world whether the onlooker reacts or not. If the art provokes something in you as an onlooker it says more about you than it does about the maker of the art or the artwork. Perhaps ask yourself about How come you cannot react? If you find yourself reacting.

Get your sketchbook and crayons, pens, graphite or pencils and copy the art as you think about it. The focused hand to brain action can open up new angles and insights.

This is a good prompt to think about time. There have been artists who have painted the same scenes at different times of days and years throughout their working lives. There are recurring themes throughout the history of art such as engaging artists to paint portraits. There are marked differences for example of how say Henry VIII was portrayed and the current Monarch King Charles III is portrayed. Yet both were and are portrayed as King. How are we reacting today compared to then as onlookers? Do you the onlooker react differently to portraits of Royalty in 2023 than you did half of your life ago? What has changed you or portraiture?

Study art history and the political climate the artist was in when they created the art. Is there a common thread with other artists of that era? If not, how do they differ?

Content to me has to be relevant, how does it compare and how does it contrast to the content, I hate useless trivial pursuits of any kind.

In the alleged uk road signs are themed by shape. This is art at work. We call such art Graphic Art. Triangles are warnings, Circles are Orders, Rectangles are information. We accept these powerful associations without thinking. These associations play a part in our reactions in life when we are not driving a car. A seasoned driver may well react differently to say a red circle on a white background than a non-driver. I don't know this for a fact I am openly guessing. I am not wishing to wave a red flag at a bull.

Yes. This is where in my opinion one needs to consider the impact the art has had on society, both during its creation and subsequent years. Has it influenced a social movement or inspired other artists?

Get anthropomorphic?with the artwork. As if the artwork was a human and you’re sitting at a bar together. What would you be talking or arguing about? What advice does the artwork give and what advice do you take from the artwork?

Spend some time with art. Why? You can think and say whatever you like about it it is only art. Art will not change the world. Only conversation can do that. Art causes conversation.

There is only one mention of technique in the above article. All of the usual tropes surrounding the analysis of art are present but insufficient. There are many different ways that artists can use their material and skills within a work of art. And the analysis we bring to the work helps us and others to understand how the artist works to create the response she wants to elicit from her audience. It is not enough to identify the elements of the work: Line, shape, mass, texture and color; we should also look for ways that the artists employed each of these separately or in concert— by applying the principles of design: Contrast, Balance, unity, rhythm and proportion.
