In my experience, we will need to verify first and understand our situation in the company. Some people might think that they are most productive employee in the company, while your boss maybe think the opposite of you. Trading company need sales and marketing, so this position will get better opportunity to be promote as structural in company. While technology company base on their developer and also business process geek as their core of process. If you don't know what company that you engage with, and what kind company that you work for then it will be difficult to assess your current situation.

I would say that being your own biggest advocate is extremely important for building visibility. Additionally, providing added value in meetings, and suggesting solutions together with problems/challenges makes you an asset, and develops your leadership skills (even when leading without formal authority, you can have a huge impact and position yourself as a go-to person for certain topics).
