The term itself reflects "correlation"; interconnection/dependability of later factor(s), if ture/happens, would directly or indirectly affect the former. Like, there is a correlation between the stocks/housing prices and interest rates. To quantify the relationship between the returns of Stock/Houseing. The correlation coefficient ranges from -1 to 1: A positive correlation (close to 1) indicates that the two stocks or housing tend to move in the same direction. When one goes up, the other also tends to go up. A negative correlation (close to -1) means the stocks/housing move in opposite directions. One goes up, the other tends to go down. A correlation close to 0 suggests little/no relationship between stocks/housing.
