Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, learn new skills, and meet new people. But did you know that it can also be a pathway to leadership development? If you are a nonprofit leader, you may want to identify and nurture potential leaders among your volunteers. Here are some tips on how to do that.
The first thing you need to look for in a future leader is passion and commitment to your cause. A passionate volunteer will show enthusiasm, initiative, and dedication in their tasks. They will also be eager to learn more about your mission, vision, and values. A committed volunteer will show up consistently, follow through on their responsibilities, and adhere to your policies and procedures. They will also be loyal, supportive, and respectful of your staff and other volunteers.
People volunteer for different reasons in non-profits, and identifying leaders from among volunteers isn't always straightforward or easy. A healthy balance between personal ambition and drive and public spiritedness and a collaborative muscle can be a good indicator of a volunteer's leadership potential.
I wouldn't be serving as the CEO of Outreach360 if our founder hadn't looked for and seen my passion and commitment when I was a short-term volunteer, staying up late to organize our books that we used with the children we were serving at the time in the Dominican Republic.

Be still. Give them the space to show off their skills and intentionally observe. Give small or short term leadership oriented projects at first, and observe some more. Be mindful that top performers are not always cut from the "leader" cloth. Have an open minded conversation about their interest level in serving in a leadership role. Not everyone wants that responsibility.
Well, now is the time to judge someone by their character: - Did they show up on time and keen to get going? - Did they engage with tasks and teammates enthusiastically and collaboratively? - They have a can do attitude and deliver tasks and follow instructions with due diligence and care. - They are empathetic and mindful of others skills and competencies and bring out the best in others. - They flag concerns and issues and come with ideas of how or fix things or mitigate risks. - They know when to say no and know their limits and to highlight when tasks should be delegated to others. They give you ideas of how to do better and be better for the needs of the business, the customers / community and the team.

A skilled volunteer will have relevant knowledge, experience, or expertise that they can apply to your projects and programs. They will also be willing to share their skills and teach others. A strong volunteer will have personal qualities that make them effective and adaptable in different situations. They will also be able to handle challenges, solve problems, and cope with stress.
Identifying future leaders among volunteers involves observing qualities such as initiative, communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, reliability, and a willingness to take on responsibility. Look for volunteers who consistently go above and beyond, demonstrate natural leadership traits, and show potential for growth and development. Providing opportunities for leadership roles and mentoring can also help nurture and develop emerging leaders among volunteers.
Volunteers come from diverse age groups and backgrounds. By observing their behaviour and response in different situations, you can identify leaders pretty quickly. People gravitate to them not because they are loud or more knowledgeable, but because they create a supporting working environment and lead by example. Organisations need to recognise and support volunteer leaders, they often become and invaluable part of the team.

An invaluable quality for a future leader to display is the ability to approach a challenging situation with tact, such as what I refer to as a "pull-up". (approaching someone about a situation where the individual did something incorrect and offering support and encouragement vs. a lecture on how said individual is "wrong") Consider this, you have a volunteer who has experience in maintaining professional relationships and noticed that another volunteer tasked with sending thank you acknowledgements to attendees of a fundraiser for your nonprofit forgot to send them out. Instead of approaching that individual with contempt or finger pointing, the volunteer with experience sits with the other and helps guide them through the process instead

The final thing you need to look for in a future leader is their potential and readiness to take on more responsibilities and roles. A potential leader will have a vision for the future, a sense of purpose, and a desire to make a difference. They will also have a growth mindset, a willingness to learn, and a receptiveness to feedback. A ready leader will have confidence, competence, and credibility. They will also have a network of supporters, mentors, and peers.
Volunteers are nonprofits. Many times we have a few staff and dozens of volunteers. Hiring from your volunteer pool is a great way to grow a passion of serving to support the large vision of the organization. I have found delegation to be one of the greatest tools to assess a volunteers' leader ability. For example, I would put out a call to action (CTA) to my seasoned volunteers asking for support to host orientations - or any outward facing event that is important to your overall operations. Ensure their success by covering requirements and allow them to step up. I would follow-up with attendees to assess the efficacy of the volunteers' session. Based on reports and the volunteers feedback, we'd be able to assess their ability to lead.
If you pay good attention to your team, you can easily gauge their capability. Make sure you select your team from the start. I would rather no volunteer at all, than a volunteer who.proves to be a liability.
Our goal as an executive team is to recruit a Vice President by the end of this summer. I desire to step back from the overall leadership of Langley Institute of Ministry and concentrate on mentoring and recruitment. This has been a great incentive for me/us to hold a leadership summit to cast our vision and to further train up good leaders who can handle national budgets, supervise centre/regional leaders, and deal with a host of other legal and pastoral issues. This has demanded more hand-holding and careful assessment of their maturity to cope with a more senior position.

All of these measures will help your organization create a supportive environment for these future leaders to grow.
Before every meeting I have for my non-profit I tell the volunteers to bring brief concept notes on ideas they want to lead and work on. In the first half we do a detailed discussion on scope, feasibility and outcomes. Through this I have found team heads who are now working extensively on their ideas.
Offer opportunities and allow people the space to do things their way, offering encouragement and support. See how they follow thru and if they complete things. Watch to see if they engage others rather than doing it all themselves.
I look for volunteers that question processes and provide solutions. I like volunteers that are honest about their needs and what they can and can not do because they are more dedicated and focused to the mission.
A good leader leads from the centre. You are part of your team. Learn to delegate and guide. Recognise talent and expertise. Ego has no place here. We are all in it for the cause.
An example of this scenario is leadership training. Training provides the knowledge to lead teams and promote organization values. One class is the how to build teams. This provide not only how to inspire teams but let them know their value. That is priceless.
Finally, you need to evaluate and improve your practices for identifying and nurturing future leaders among your volunteers. To do this, you should communicate expectations and criteria for leadership development, monitor and measure the progress and performance of potential leaders, address challenges and barriers that may hinder them from reaching their full potential, solicit and incorporate feedback from potential leaders and other stakeholders, as well as update and refine your leadership development strategy based on findings and outcomes. By following these tips, you can create a pipeline of talent and succession for your nonprofit organization.
As a leader, it is important to actively engage with your volunteers. Having worked with volunteers many years, I have found that while many volunteer because of the organization's mission, others volunteer to gain new skills. It is important to get to know the volunteer and determine what their goals are for volunteering. This is a great opportunity to ask them about learning new skills. If this is of interest, it can increase volunteer engagement and be a great win/win. For example, many of the volunteers for the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association are looking to expand into new roles at their workplace. Often volunteers will serve in an area where they can grow a new skill set to gain experience in the role they are seeking.
Continuous improvement and feedback, both positive and negative help groups grow. Provide a safe space where ideas and creative thinking is valued. As diversity and equity programs are challenged, consider ways to still include all voices to build mutual trust and Growth mindset.

If you see and hear an individual acting in the civic voluntary space in so many different and creative ways; you see and hear leadership. Volunteering is an act of taking a lead.

Part 2. I happened to walk into the volunteer training meeting as I usually get introduced as the CEO. That BINGO volunteer was leading the training! I looked at my vol cord with huge smile (could've hugged her). Forward a bit: Christmas event. Bd mbr had led these events in the past. He saw things had changed and saw this vol leader orchestrating and said something needed to be done differently. She said, "Sir, this is how we've decided, it's better." Him, "Who are you?" She, "Sir, I'm the event leader." Him, locates the vol coord and tells her to tell She to do it the way its been done before. Vol coord, That's how our volunteers redesigned the serving. They now wait for them to be seated and then serve them. BINGO. Volunteer Leaders.
In a society where there is a push for everyone to be leaders (and a clear disconnect from what leadership really is), it is more important to note volunteers' strengths and aptitude. Then encourage, equip, and empower them to grow and take on greater responsibilities in those areas. While paid individuals should be pushed to grow in areas that are challenging for them, this is not necessarily a requirement for volunteers. If a volunteer is eager to accept feedback and develop those strengths, support them. But if not, try to limit them to tasks that the excel with.
Excite volunteers by stepping into their passion. Consider inviting volunteers to develop personal projects to advance the mission by exploring their interests. One individual enhanced the bathroom with items from Home Goods, mouthwash, and soap/lotion from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Another decorated the office with eclectic art. Start by asking, if you can change anything, what would you change and how would you do it? Listen for the intent and impact for change.
