I feel instead of trying to identify weaknesses, it would be far more rewarding to identify strengths. Every human being has their strength and if we can tap onto those, it will, far over compensate any 'weaknesses'.

Clearly define the criteria and expectations for each employee's role. What is on my plate( A concept taught to me in Cummins Inda) Use HR analytics to capture Metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess employee performance. Conduct regular performance reviews. We generally do an annual ritual to tick the do list. performance. Encourage employees to perform self-assessments. Providing feedback, focus on constructive criticism rather than solely pointing out weaknesses. Build development plans. The internal culture should be such that the individual has no fear of sharing his/her concerns and challenges. The goal of identifying weaknesses is not to criticize or discourage employees but to help them grow and improve.

Often we rely upon the job description to define our "clear and realistic" expectations, but many times those are outdated and inaccurate. Think beyond that job description and define what great performance looks like and make that something that is regularly communicated to the team. When you define your expectations in terms of what outstanding performance looks like, your team knows what they need to do to perform well and even achieve their promotional goals!
