How can you identify career threats and make better career decisions?

Are you someone who takes the responsibility of managing your career , or you depend on others to tell you what to do ? Career Management of self can be based on where you started , where are you at present and where do you want to move. Then one needs to check your environment , situation and also conduct a self SWOT to understand where you stand and what is the need of the industry . Addressing the gap will make your resume and your career more appropriate as per the market demands Work on the continuous learning , to upgrade self . Role and its development is there but one has to be open to opportunities which can give more exposure to knowledge and experience .

Identifying career threats often requires a deep self-assessment, SWOT is a good tool. While there are numerous questions/ways to consider, a crucial one is: "What aspect of your career situation makes your blood boil or gives you goosebumps?" This visceral reaction can reveal the areas that matter most to you guiding you to take proactive steps for career development.

Career threats are not only proportional to market dynamics. It can happen to anyone in the current situation. The best strategy would be constantly learning and making your presence and knowledge inevitable to the team. Establish your strengths. Work on your weakness in private. Network a lot. Explore and be aware of current market situations. Keep learning new skills and repeat.

An excellent exercise I propose to my team members is identifying some of the immediate boulders they are working on. Starting from that, draw a number of cylinders equal to the number of those efforts on a piece of paper. For the next month, every time you work on one of those particular boulders, draw and fill in a piece of the cylinder that is mentally equal to how emotionally or mentally draining working on it is. The cylinders that are full or close to complete by the end of the month might need support from your career growth plan. Now, can you identify what lies underneath the surface of those efforts and what you can work on to improve your efficacy when dealing with them?

Knowing yourself, observe and always hungry to learn along to open-minded to get advice from others. If something is unexpected, please calm and listen your mind with heart, what you want, what your strength, what you need to improve and make a plan with discipline timeline to action. Enjoy your journey and please do not compare to others. Everybody had a different start-point.

Please note: explore your options does not mean asking everyone you meet or know to refer you in for a job at their company. The key here is explore. Get to know what alternatives are out there by asking people in your network to share more about what they do. Then ask those network contacts to introduce you around. But you must have some focus or reason for connecting beyond your interest. “I’ve never worked in hospitality but I just finished an e-learning course, and I’d really like to hear what working in hotels is like.” That’s a tangible ask, reflecting on what you know/don’t know or like/don’t like.

It's perfectly fine to express interest in various career paths, but it's equally important to conduct thorough research beforehand. There's no one-size-fits-all dream job out there. It's more like finding the perfect pair of sneakers – they've got to match your style and make you feel awesome while chasing your aspirations!

I’ve found (for myself and through hearing about others’ experiences) that the worst career decisions can come when you only have one offer in hand and get into your head that you have a binary choice: take that offer or be stuck in your current position (whether that’s employed somewhere or unemployed). That can lead to desperation and rash decision-making. It’s a false choice because there are an incredibly large number of potential avenues to explore… you just need to see and approach it that way. The best approach is to try to line up a couple good options, to give yourself a real, satisfying choice; easier said then done, but it’s worth the effort, even if it comes at the sacrifice of one-off opportunities occasionally

Your choices are going to be driven by your values and circumstances. Consider where you are prepared to compromise and make yourself a good "pros and cons" list so you can see what is really important to you.

Fail to plan is a plan to fail. However, I would suggest take some risks if you are an adventurer. AI had already begun its journey way before 2023. ChatGPT kicks the door open for everyone. Be agile and willing to take risks on something new. Be open to failure. Agree or disagree, Jeff Bezos’ bold move paid off. Amazon grew from an online bookstore into the e-commerce/ technology giant we know today.

The most dangerous career threats mask as attractive dimensions. For example, some people stay in a toxic job that doesn't work for them and defend it because "it's a good paycheck" or "I won't get these kinds of perks elsewhere." Yeah, but at what cost? One's ability to thrive in their workplace is predicated on you knowing what makes them tick. If you're not getting that, then a paycheck is hardly sufficient to keep you there without you losing your wellbeing.

Periodically review and adapt your career plan. Assess how your choices align with your objectives and values. Learn from your journey, embrace new opportunities, and respond to industry shifts to ensure a fulfilling and successful career.

LISTEN when you ask for advice and guidance and hear what is being said. Whether you agree with the information you are receiving or not, be appreciative of it and be positive. There is no bigger turnoff for someone in a position to give career advice than to have someone immediately say, "No, that won't work." Ask clarifying questions if you need to. Share what you've done to date. Be in tune to the vibes you are giving off in your efforts to seek help.

How do they align with your current role, organization, and industry? What are the trends, opportunities, and threats in your field? Assess your career threats. What are the obstacles that could prevent you from achieving your career goals? These could be internal factors (e.g., lack of skills or experience) or external factors (e.g., economic recession, industry decline).

After nearly 2 decades of being a HR professional my primary task would be to identify complete career risks. New technologies can disrupt industries and obsolete expertise. Economic downturns can cost jobs and advancement. Industry trends fluctuate, so stay flexible. Consider talents, strengths, interests, values, and goals when choosing a career. Consider your field's trends, possibilities, and risks. After identifying career dangers, you can build mitigation plans accordingly. Remember if you clearly identify your weakness its easy to workout on them. Enhance your public interaction and outreach skills to boost your exposure and effect.
