How can you identify and address barriers to program participation?

To identify and address barriers to program participation, knowing your target audience is crucial. Utilize observation and empathy to understand their needs and challenges. Intentional inclusion ensures diverse perspectives are considered, promoting a welcoming environment. By actively listening and incorporating feedback, programs can be tailored to remove obstacles and enhance participation for all.

In effectively communicating your value proposition, stakeholder involvement is key. Engage stakeholders early on to gather insights and feedback, ensuring their needs and perspectives are integrated. Clearly articulate how the program benefits stakeholders, highlighting the value they stand to gain. By involving stakeholders in the process, you build buy-in and create a shared vision that resonates with all parties involved, fostering collaboration and support for the program's success.

Engaging parents may be the most difficult task. While you will always have a few attend, they are normally the ones who least need your services. Those who would benefit most have hectic schedules, may be doing shift work, and may be single parents. Often they are not coming simply because they can't, not because they don't want to. My most successful parent program included a simple dinner (pizza and salad donated by a local restaurant) and simultaneous programming for children. This way, the parents did not need to worry about feeding their children before rushing to the program or finding childcare. By making the kids' activities fun, instead of having to drag them out, they became advocates for encouraging their parents to attend.

Listening to ideal participants or those who have disengaged can help identify external barriers. It could be a simple fix, like moving the program date and/or time. Or something more complex like a language barrier or the presentation or environment was unwelcoming. Reaching out to those who signed up but did not attend or those who began to engage but stopped attending would be the most likely way to find out this information. After participants complete a program, you can also ask about external barriers they endured and create barrier busters to address those issues moving forward, like offering bus passes or gas gift cards.

As an international nonprofit organization, we are always working to overcome external barriers in language, cultural norms and timezones. We've had great success in emphasizing virtual programming, with an interactive component. We then offer our members access to on-demand recordings of the virtual programming if their schedule doesn't match the programming schedule. We're very cognizant of offering programming sessions on different days and times to try to maximize scheduling feasibility for our members.
