With Environmental Consulting much like any other technical profession the actual work you do in the office can be learned through experience. BUT! What will set you apart are things that cant be learned. A strong moral compass, a positive outlook, honesty and determination to solve problems and follow through.

Try level up your networking game and pick up some awesome skills, by joining Toastmasters, giving debate classes a shot, or even trying improv classes.

Create a broad network of peers and subject matter experts that you, and they, can reach out to for support. Having a network of SMEs that I can turn to, to support me makes me be a better resource for my clients and gives me the opportunity to expand my knowledge on a particular subject.

To build up the confidence between potential clients and you, as an environmental consultant, you have to make use of and indicate your professional qualifications, such as master's or PhD degrees, professional engineer license, chartered scientist and/or corporate membership of professional organizations, in your name cards so as to show others that you have learned wide and deep enough knowledge in some specific areas of environmental issues, either from books or your past project experience. It takes some years for fresh graduates to achieve the above qualifications. Clients may not initially have enough confidence to face too young or entry-level environmental consultants.

Perhaps we should start by communicating effectively and gaining the trust of our own team. Everyone in the team presents the face of your company, from junior field staff to VPs and CEOs. An aligned sense of purpose and priority is easy to communicate to others. While the language may change, your message should be consistent between stakeholders. Chances are that a strong team has already raised all or most of the concerns and expectations of your stakeholders; now show them that you and your client can be trusted.

It is Key to gain this social skill as it is a good way of differentiating good and bad workplace practice of meeting clients' needs and avoiding miscommunication. One of the main activities that an environmental consultant executes is guiding and supporting clients. For this purpose, you usually need to teach something to your clients first: sometimes it is the details of a law, how to use an IT tool that will accelerate their data management, etc. Therefore, having excellent communicative skills (in several language if possible) and the ability to teach are paramount. Also being able to understand the knowledge of the clients about a certain topic, their abilities, their difficulties to learn and always adapt to these is something every consultant must train to be succesful.

Not really. Have some contradictory opinion. Once you become flexible and adaptive...you will change your perspective. So stick to your basic fundamentals. Mass balance, total yield, energy consumption and contamination. It may be waste for you...and may be raw material for other. So you can't deliberate your view in conflict. Firm on your approach and find options in mitigations. Every field has criticism and errors. Diluting facts may lead to demoralisation. But yes, stick to scientific approaches.

Long term success comes from showing achievements and the ability to meet or exceed goals. Strategies for delivering excellent service to your clients can be used in various situations and companies. Show that even if your past accomplishment was not specific to the companies current service/product line, that it can easily be adapted to suit their needs.

As indicated, adaptability is a critical component of consulting. If you find yourself, for example, in a management position with numerous contractors on a project, layers of complexities increase with variables you can control / you can influence / you cannot control / anticipate (always have a back door plan). Stress / fear inhibit cognitive function detrimentally - understand if you get into consulting, it is fast, demanding, & you need to be alert to adapt to schedules / incidents / stress... both in field & on desktop. Being able to be swift / flexible is a must (this does not mean be loose with schedules / deadlines, if you want residual job requests).

All in all, I'd say, be passionate about the environment and the work that you do. If you're passionate, you can definitely go a long way from there. Yes, sometimes, there might be challenges along the way, such as dealing with a tough client, facing tight deadlines, and the constant need to update yourself with the latest knowledge. Passion serves as your guiding light in this journey. It fuels your determination to make a difference (no matter how small it is) and propels you through the inevitable hurdles. It's the driving force that keeps you motivated when the going gets tough. It's also important to work with like-minded people - people with the same values as you. They will add fuel to your passion and keep the fire burning.

Although it's almost 50-years since I was at high school I realize that the great grounding I got in science, including geomorphology and even English (interpretation of laws, policies & reviewing documents of multi- cultural writers) has been invaluable for my whole working life without even having to get into Uni debt. So if any student out there has any doubt about the incredible value & commitment of teachers in helping you learn then you need a good PC kick up the rear!

One final thing of note is that you will always be subject to the vagaries and whims of the industry. I've been in a successful company who lost their primary contract due to corporate restructuring and ended up laying off about half their staff. Remain positive and passionate, but be practical. Keep your options open and be aware of industry trends and the political climate.

In my experience environmental consultants require mix of skills and traits but in first Pursuing education. A Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or Environmental Science is typically required to begin a career in this field. Consider pursuing a minor in business, communications or public relations in context of different governmental consents to help you gain the skills you need for consulting.

I have found that taking ownership of projects no matter the size, can lead to great success. It shows your management team that you are not only capable of self-direction but also passionate about your work. If you're given a project, own it!
