One of my early, successful start ups was indeed very resource constrained. Operating on a very small angel round to get operations off the ground, we were only able to hire people fresh out of college, often with liberal arts degrees. Looking back now over 20 years, many of those early hires went on to have long and successful careers. There are 2 aspects to this. 1. Hiring - Before hiring we should be clear about the roadmap for the role and what we are offering now vs how this can grow up and help in the long term. Other than only skills, its important to identify someone whose short term and long term goals are also aligned to what the company has to offer. 2. Retention - I believe if the first one is taken care of during hiring and the person is aligned to the long term mission and growth path, attrition may not be due to budget. They should realize and take pride in doing their part to build the org. Given other aspects are taken care of and the overall trajectory of the company is as per the projections, retention of such talent should not be a major challenge.
