How can you help your team members develop their skills?

Start by understanding the current skills and strengths of each team member. This can be done through individual assessments or discussions. An overall skills matrix of the team can be great if visual, which at a glance allows you to see gaps.

Employee in our company has a competency map on their skill pools, ex. electrical engineering has a skill pool for maintenance. Each map has skill blocks such as: - Basic skills - Discipline Competencies Specific to the Position - Skills in Closely Related Disciplines - Software & Organizational Systems - HSSE Competencies. Competency Level, Skill Elements & Skill Categories are components of skill block. Each person should self-assess his real skill level against pre-set level. The evaluation should cover each block, category & element. Line manager must also provide an evaluation of each member of his team. The gaps between both assessments in each level is then addressed. Finally, Training & development plans are set accordingly

I think the starting point should be the assessment of current skills. From there, we should discuss the tools which are in demand and the goals and targets of the person and based on it an appropriate tool should be finalised for learning.

As a team member, you can help your colleagues develop their skills by creating a supportive and collaborative environment. Encouraging open communication, providing constructive feedback, and offering mentorship can be valuable in nurturing their growth. Identifying their strengths and areas for improvement, then tailoring learning opportunities to their needs can also be effective. Additionally, promoting a culture of continuous learning, sharing resources and knowledge, and offering them opportunities to take on new challenges can contribute to their professional development.

It is important to set goals as they help set the direction for the team members. However, it is very important to set the goals using the SMART framework as they help us measure the progress along the way. While setting each of these goals we ensure that they are realistic and achievable and having a deadline gives a sense of urgency.

The most important part of providing feedback is to do it in a timely manner - immediately. This means you need to take notes live to share right after the event. Timely feedback helps the person who is receiving the feedback remember the context. Memories fade quickly and feedback is exponentially less effective with time.

Once we have the SMART goals in place, it is important to have a regular check-in with the team member to see how are we doing. Furthermore, it is important to work with the team members to identify the areas where they need to improve and get better. It is ideal to have timely feedback, instead of holding it until year end.

Encouraging team learning through various means is crucial for innovation and will improve the overall learning experience. - Knowledge sharing sessions: Facilitate such sessions within the team to promote learning through the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and analyses. - Training opportunities: Identify and recommend relevant workshops, conferences, or training courses to provide valuable learning exposure. - Learning resources access: Offer access to learning portals and online courses to foster self-directed learning. - Encourage Certifications: Encourage team members to pursue certifications and boosting their skills and professional credibility.

It is vital to encourage and appreciate the learning in the team. As a leader, you should ensure that the team is learning and staying synchronized with the current industry trends. Learning can be in so many forms and shapes as it doesn't need to be a formal class training. it can be an informal session such as a discussion among peers, a small mentoring session, or visiting a conference to learn about recent developments in the industry.

in my opinion, the most important part is motivation if there is a good cause for learning people find a way and resource to learn new things Creating this cause is the most important thing that managers can do to encourage people to learn

SMART goals help us track the progress throughout the year or quarter but it is important to do the retrospective at the end of the goal period to see what team member has achieved. How they have learned different skills, where they have been pushed to the limit and went above and beyond, and if they can do better in certain areas. Having said that, the progress should be appreciated by the team members to keep them motivated.
