How can you help your sales team build stronger client relationships?

First, don't assume clients want a relationship. While you may want one, some clients don't want to have a relationship with you! They just want you to deliver on your promise. Conversely, here are some questions to help design the type of relationship your clients want-not you. “Thanks for taking the time to discuss how you want to work together. What I want for you is to ensure we’re delivering the level of service & value you expect. Is it okay to ask you a few questions to ensure we develop & maintain a great relationship?” 1.How would you define a successful vendor partnership/engagement? 2.What can we do to maintain our positive relationship? 3.What would end our relationship? 4.How can we best deliver on your expectations?

I always recommend that sales teams start by doing an 80/20 analysis of your customer list. Who are your most vital customers? Who is bringing in the profit? From there, you can look for trends within those top customer accounts. Who are the buyers? What role are they in? Why are they buying from you? What are they buying from you? From this analysis, you can start to truly understand who your top customers are.

It is important Sales representatives connect with the consultants working on the client projects, being onsite and working with client stakeholders. This brings an enormous knowledge at Sales side on client issues, possibilities for value creation and a deepened understanding of the client position. Result? Less ‘cold selling’, appreciative clients, and the opportunity to drive maximal value creation for the client!

Really understand who your client is, is very important. Ask questions, ask deeper questions and listen to understand. Don't come with a solution unless you actually know your customer. Make sure to check if you have understood them correctly. Thats building a relationship. Stop selling, start listening and help your clients. We train our sales reps in doing this. Ask better questions, not to answer them, but to understand the client. we provide feedback to each other (have we asked and listened good enough). Good exercise.

To really understand your clients requires the combination of two powerful skills: Powerful Questions and Active Listening. Powerful questions are those that elevate the conversation beyond what you offer to fully understand all the factors impacting your client's business. There may be priorities outside the scope of what you can solve - but within your power to assist by making a strategic introduction or providing other insights given your business acumen. Active listening means not only hearing what is said, but what is not said, and probing further into the underlying issues. Demonstrate your expertise by getting beyond the surface issues to the systemic challenges. These two skills are essential to being a trusted advisor.

Absolutely, crafting meaningful connections means more than just listing product details. It's about understanding needs and weaving stories. Tailored solutions, highlighting benefits, and sharing relatable case studies make these connections genuine and lasting.

Always talk about what it means to your client. Which value do they gain. Stop talking about specs and snacks (features). A good exercise to train with the team. Take an afternoon and let your sales reps tell and ask questions bout value for the client. Let a 'bell ring' when someone is talking specs and snacks. Help them with talking about values and outcomes for the client. Provide use cases/stories. It's fun to do, we all learn from each other.

It's always important to make sure that you spend less time talking and more time listening to your clients. Actually make it more about what you can do for them and not always what they can do or even give to you. Focus on the value adds, not the product or solution itself. Always ask yourself, How can I help this client achieve their goals with my solution? Make it about the client, be the solution giver, the money will follow.

Coach your team on solidifying their value and solutions using references, testimonials, and case studies. References provide proof of positive outcomes that reinforce the solution. Case studies and testimonials that align with the client's challenges and goals help establish a powerful emotional connection. These stories reinforce the solution and allow the client to picture how it can meet their needs and goals.

I disagree; the next step is to comprehend the problems or challenges to be addressed. Without a deep understanding of the cost side of the equation, it's impossible to demonstrate genuine value. If you can't effectively communicate the problem, you won't be able to sell the solution.

Don't wait until your prospect is ready to buy to start building your relationship or nurturing them. You should be providing value and communicating with your prospects throughout their cycle, and it doesn't finish when the sale is done. - Connect with them on LinkedIn and engage with their posts - Frequently share content with tips and best practices. Forget about the features and focus on building trust - When trust is built, take the relationship off social but keep nurturing them on social - Invite your connections for a virtual coffee, and get to know them on a personal level

Normally, I use various channels and follow up consistently. Addressing objections and feedback respectfully is key, in my experience.

Customize your communication style to your buyers style. Some will want more details, others big picture. It is not just what you use to communicate, but also the words, tone and pace. It is not just what you say, but how you say it. No one is eager to get checkins and followups, they add no value. Instead, offer content that gives insights into their situation. When you ask good targeted questions during the conversation, you will know what content is most relatable for them in their decision making process.

Regular check-ins with clients are more than just routine meetings; they're opportunities for meaningful engagement. These check-ins signal our commitment to our client's success, and they provide a platform for ongoing dialogue. Through regular communication, we can stay attuned to any evolving needs, concerns, or goals our clients may have. It's a chance to demonstrate that we're not just interested in transactions but in nurturing a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership.

Client Advisory Boards: Establish client advisory boards where clients can provide input and suggestions for improving your products or services. Educational Content: Share educational content with clients, providing valuable insights and information that can help them in their business or industry. Customized Solutions: Train your sales team to provide customized solutions that address the specific pain points and goals of each client. Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-in calls or meetings to discuss the client's progress, address concerns, and explore new opportunities.

If the only time people hear from you is when you want something, they will quickly stop responding. Give to get. Give them referrals and introductions. Catch up without an agenda of your own. Stay curious about what is happening with them, even when that has nothing to do with what you sell.

Add Value Beyond Sales: Encourage your salespeople to provide value beyond the initial sale, such as by offering resources, tips, or insights that benefit the client. Empathy and Understanding: Cultivate empathy and understanding in your team. Clients appreciate when their salespeople genuinely care about their success. Conflict Resolution Skills: Equip your team with effective conflict resolution skills to address any issues or disputes with clients promptly and professionally. Networking Opportunities: Organize events or networking opportunities where clients can connect with each other and with your team.

As the saying goes, people buy from people. Through my experience, though it is rewarding to nurture on relationships, i often encouraged my sales team to have 2 prong strategies. Select those that is "potential" to nurture, and those not in the potential category aka run rate would have very high level touch point or leverage on other resources to nurture the relationship simply because sales reps are not super man or woman, there are only so much one can do.

Using a Relationship building approach to your sales methodology is the best way to close quality sales deals that lead to additional deals via referrals. Teaching my sales teams to be the SME in their space was the best thing I could've taught them. It helps their clients or even prospects look to them as the knowledge source for that particular solution or product. You should be so good that prospects will even bring a competitors product to you before purchasing just to hear your opinion. Before you know it, it turns into a long term relationship for you.

I believe that being proactive also makes sense. It is about anticipating our clients' needs before they even realize them. It's about taking the initiative to provide solutions, insights, or support before our clients have to ask. By staying ahead of the curve and offering proactive assistance, we position ourselves as trusted advisors. We show our clients that we're not just reactive but are actively committed to their success. This proactive approach can lead to stronger, more resilient client relationships and help us stay at the forefront of our clients' minds.

Most sales people , at least early on in their career, have not been coached on how to have a meaningful exploration conversation let alone a strategic one to put themselves in a position of trust. Roll playing , although hated by many, is extremely effective to help prepare your team. I also have them shadow myself or someone that is really effective at customer communication and/or take them to customer in a like industry to learn about the industry or product. I will provide SME’s in a subject prior to strategic conversation so my team member can learn and review case studies. Just some ideas ??

Share stories with your team, failure and success stories. Bring your experience to the room, show genuine interest to help them improve, and if any important information from an industry arises in a conversation with a client, also share with the team in case they are following a company from the same sector. Talk, share, support, Sales is a beautiful profession that is better with a great team.

I firmly believe in the power of teamwork when it comes to understanding clients. It's not just the responsibility of one person or department; it's a collective effort. Empowering our sales and support teams with the tools, training, and collaborative mindset they need is crucial. When these teams collaborate and share insights about client interactions, we can create a more holistic understanding of our client's needs. Promoting transparency and collaboration is pivotal for a successful team dynamic. Encourage small progressive objectives to help build confidence when coaching on goal setting. Emphasize the importance of accountability and taking ownership. As a coach, be a mentor as part of your team’s support system. Highlight achievements and successes and coach through the setbacks.

I constantly assess my strategies and rely on data and feedback for improvements. Adapting and refining strategies is essential, in my opinion.

As you tweak your approach, you're better able to hit the right notes with your clients – addressing their needs, solving their problems, and exceeding their expectations. Don't get stuck in a rut. Embrace change, adapt, and watch those relationships thrive.

Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate client milestones, such as anniversaries, achievements, or successful projects together. Post-Sale Support: Offer post-sale support and assistance, ensuring that clients feel cared for after the deal is closed. Remember that building strong client relationships is an ongoing process. Your sales team should continually work to deepen these relationships, adapt to client needs, and seek opportunities for mutual growth and success.

In sales one of the very crucial and critical aspect - maintaining and developing sustainable relationship with client… Always listen to your client, without interrupting. Let them speak up for their feelings, always allow them to express their emotions and concerns. Ask politely for more information. We always jump to the conclusion or solution as we do not have patience, but remember a solution needs to be respected by client which is only possible when they have expressed themselves, in between the same solution has less impact. Be compassionate about their issues, listen understand and solve in such a manner which reflects problem solving attitude. A product is always purchased to do a specific job, in the same manner be specific.

Ask your client what they think of the relationship. How do they see you, where do you stand. Let the client know where you want to go with the relationship. See if we align. If not, ask questions and keep on building.

The most important thing is to just be a good human and demonstrate a respectful attitude. And like your mom/dad might have told you as a child, "just be yourself" there's nothing to be gained by faking an interest in their interests or pretending you know more about them than you do. It's much better to engage with curiosity than to pretend you share an interest. 9.5 times out of 10 it will be obviously fake and/ or you will be found out.
