I assist my mentee in honing negotiation and conflict resolution skills by fostering their ability to become influencers and politically savvy within their organization. By developing a deep understanding of organisational politics and leveraging influence, they can craft win-win solutions that satisfy all parties involved. This approach cultivates a harmonious and productive work environment while advancing the mentee's professional growth and success.

Conflict resolution and negotiation skills can be developed over a period of time. In fact, both are set of processes and if followed accordingly, results in great success. Both conflict resolution and negotiation skills are interconnected and go hand in hand. Both these skills require that the coachee is highly skilled in other skills like empathy, emotional intelligence, communication, and collaboration. Hence, as a Coach, help your coachee to first understand the process of conflict resolution and negotiation skills and then help him/her to develop the required skills as mentioned above.

Finding win-win is a mindset issue first and a strategy issue second... Many negotiations are entered into with the attitude of I need to get more. When we flip that over and start by asking ourselves what can I give that will be high value to the other party, so I can create a win for them, then we put ourselves in a strong position to ask for something of value in return. This often requires patience, resilience and the desire to really understand the other party's circumstances and values.

Understanding what the mentee wants to gain from the resolution will help to understand the current state of emotional intelligence and ability to adapt to a negotiation mindset. Examples of previous negotiations and conflict resolutions are helpful if the mentee can accurately and coherently describe the situation leading up to the need for resolution, without emotion or bias. Then, as the mentor, it is possible to get the accurate starting point.

Many people do not realize that negotiation is not a winner-take-all slug fest. Both sides gain, but not at the expense of damaging the other. Being able to share this approach is a great way to frame the discussion and show that how someone approaches negotiation and conflict resolution really does affect the process and outcome's success.

Hinzukommt, wenn wir über Konflikte im Gesch?ftsleben nachdenken, hilft es, zu wissen, dass 80% der Konflikte daraus resultieren, dass 2 Bedürfnisse vernachl?ssigt werden. Und zwar Wertsch?tzung und Macht. Als Faustregel gilt also: Wenn man einen Konflikt spürt, gilt es zuerst zu überlegen, ob er mit Wertsch?tzung oder Macht zu tun hat.

Help mentees understand that a lot of what we call "progress" is going to feel more time-consuming and less "linear" than we're conditioned to believe. Upwards trajectories take time -- celebrating the small victories is critically important. If you only celebrate the big wins, you can lose sight of the smaller steps forward that are occurring. Helping mentees also celebrate the small wins builds confidence and creates a feeling of forward momentum. Sometimes so much of it can be the lens through which we assess accomplishments.

I prefer to focus on mindset and language, emphasizing influence over negotiation and conflict as a divergence to reconcile. In a true win-win, both parties are equally satisfied or dissatisfied at the end. Preparation is key; consider the situation, historical context, individual perceptions, existing gaps, moods, and mindsets. Clearly outline reasonable outcomes and identify what aspects are up for discussion. Compile a set of questions to infuse curiosity into the conversation, anticipate potential pitfalls and moves them to think. Too often we don’t prepare for conversations like these. Preparation enables us to be more present, attentive, curious, and facilitates steering the discussion towards a mutually beneficial outcome.

The need for conflict resolution and negotiation means that there is a pervasive, underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Resolving the current issue is critical, but so is identifying accurately the root cause and addressing what brought the conflict to the surface.
