How can you help teachers work together more effectively?

Teachers can work in collaboration by working on common vision , objective and outcome. Each team/ member can contribute the area they are expert in. Collectively the ideas can be shared snd based on consensus can be streamlined. The team as per potential can have members to plan the event and the other to execute.. Joint project failures also lead to positive learning outcome and no one alone takes the onus , it is shared credit or discredit.

Teachers are first and foremost people, recognize that they have feelings, needs and wants. An unhappy person cannot be a happy teacher. A worried mensch can’t be a effective educator. Foster Kindness and Care and staff will be able to contribute to the culture of the organization. When the culture is one of inclusivenesses and collaborative effort the system performa well.

Revisit your school's mission statement and core values. Ensure that they align with the goals of the teacher team. If not, consider revising them collaboratively. Then create an atmosphere where teachers feel comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives. Encourage open discussions and debates to generate insights that contribute to the vision. Emphasize the connection between the shared vision and improved student outcomes. Discuss how achieving these goals will benefit students, making it a compelling motivation for teachers. Allow teachers to take ownership of specific aspects of the shared vision or goals. When teachers have a personal stake in the vision, they are more likely to be committed to its realization.

Ever been at the supermarket and bumped into a student who says, "Ms/Mr. SoAndSo, what are you doing here"? The irony in this question is that everyone needs groceries, so it's a pretty common activity to shop. Our students sometimes forget that we are simply human, too. In the same manner, our work relationships are sometimes dehumanizing. We interact as if we were walking on glass eggshells making sure no one sees how imperfect we are, how vulnerable we can be, and how human is our essence. We limit our relationships in this setting to "professional" exchanges where unrealistic expectations are created for the behaviors and reactions of our peers. Contrary to popular belief, this can create an environment of distrust and misjudgement.

By actively investing in these relationships, I cultivate a sense of camaraderie and trust within the team. Through leading by example and demonstrating genuine care and consideration for others, I foster a team spirit that encourages collaboration and collective achievement. These strong interpersonal bonds enhance our working environment also contribute to our collective success as educators

A growth mindset is the beacon that guides us, reminding us that our abilities and skills are not fixed, but rather dynamic and malleable. It is the unwavering belief that through dedication, effort and the nurturing power of feedback, we can ascend to great heights. Yet, it is not enough to merely possess this mindset as individuals; we must cultivate it collectively as a team. A culture of learning is the fertile ground in which our growth mindset thrives. In this nurturing ecosystem, we treasure every opportunity to learn and grow. Peer observation becomes a source of enlightenment, a chance to gain insights from the experiences of our fellow teachers. Coaching and mentoring become acts of generosity, where wisdom is shared.

As a school leader, I understand the importance of being humble as I interact with others. We don't know it all, so we shouldn't pretend to know it all. In accepting the areas we need to strengthen, we automatically open up to receiving the feedback of others. I'd rather be the one with the Ph.D. who is willing to grow with others, than being resistant to change through a fixed mindset.

Part of having a growth mindset is how we receive information and opinions from others; especially those in authority over us, those who we would consider our peers, and from outsiders. Having a mindset of positive presupposition allows us to not receive comments and criticism as harshly or negatively, as we would without it. We take those comments and criticisms with the idea that they are not personal attacks, but rather are intended to improve either our performance or achieve intended results. There will always be those, however, who receive comments and criticisms as arrows and barbs against them. They will view these as slights, which will in-turn create a negative atmosphere that is anti-collaboration, and pro self preservation.

One of the best ways to give feedback is to give it in 3 steps: 1. a 'positive' comment of what the person did well 2. followed by an area that could be 'improved' and 3. give a constructive 'next step', something that the person can do next to work on it. This is a format that can be used for any situation, be it a boss, a leader, a teacher or a student learner.

Feedback drives me crazy because when I got feedback from my tutors at university I used to write 20 questions for them to justify why I got the feedback. I became more in tune with feedforward - where one of my tutors would instead point out what I could have done better in the future than what I did wrong in the past. Feedforward works wonders - it does not judge, accuse, or punish. It just tells you what to do to improve.

If you want to create a safe, effective feedback experience, one of the best ways to do so is to engage the teacher in a reflection of their own work, on what they did well, where they surprised themselves, what they learned, and where they believed there was room for growth. This actually works for any member of the team. By allowing them to lead the discussion, and identifying their strengths, achievements, and successes, I found them ready and open to reflect on the challenges they were facing and figure out ways in which to unpack and process how to deal with the challenges themselves. This process was empowering, productive, and enjoyable. My role was to probe and encourage. Feedback became an incredibly enjoyable process!

It is in the recognition and celebration of this diversity that we find our true source of inspiration. Embracing our diversity is not merely a choice; it is a commitment to excellence. It is the understanding that, like a mosaic, our individual pieces come together to form something greater, something grander. Our differences are not divides; they are bridges that connect us, enabling us to traverse the vast landscape of ideas and possibilities.

Leveraging strengths and diversity could be a recipe for stagnation, mediocre performance, and comfort zone syndrome, leading to no innovation, critical performance, or improvement in knowledge. The alternative to this approach starts with recruitment where colleagues are recruited according to the values and ethos of the organisation or institution. And hence, everyone promotes the same values and ethos, using their strengths and diversity. Therefore, everyone is challenged to step up to the task even if their skills need improvement in order to comply with the execution of the value principles and or ethos impact.

Every teacher brings unique skills and perspectives to the team. Recognize and celebrate these differences, assigning roles or tasks that play to each person’s strengths. This approach not only optimizes productivity but also enriches team creativity and problem-solving.

Celebration is not a frivolous act but a profound acknowledgment of our efforts. It is the recognition that every small victory, every incremental improvement, contributes to the grand tapestry of our success. It is in these moments of celebration that we rejuvenate our spirits, fuel our motivation and inspire one another to reach even greater heights. But celebration alone is not enough; it is only one side of the coin. Equally important is the art of evaluation, where we delve deep into the waters of reflection. We assess our progress with a discerning eye, identifying the currents that have carried us forward and the obstacles that have challenged us.

This is why daily scrum is one of the best activities of a scrum master - celebrating small wins every day or time. And there should be routines for celebration as well as unplanned and impromptu celebrations. This demands that everyone be alert to the success of each and everyone, and should be generous enough to call out for a celebration. I must admit though, that it takes higher beings to do this genuinely without prejudice, jealousy, and a bit of "why not me today?" attitude.

Recognizing achievements, both big and small, helps build morale and reinforces the value of teamwork. Regularly reviewing progress toward goals also provides an opportunity to assess strategies, make improvements, and celebrate successes, creating a positive cycle of continuous improvement.

Routines are so important, especially when we think about how we come together with the important people in our professional and personal lives. This morning, I was listening to the podcast "Your Mama's Kitchen" and thinking about how important that room is to the touching base of my family. The kitchen is where the calendar is, the daily departures/arrivals of each family member is charted, it's where we greet each other, it's where we eat together, it's where we find out what is happening with each other, from the big to the small. Where is the figurative kitchen for you and your colleagues? What is the space for you coming together and talking about what is happening in your classrooms? It is probably not the assigned PLC classroom.

Effective teamwork requires adaptability and patience. Encourage a supportive atmosphere where mistakes are seen as learning experiences, and keep lines of communication open to address any conflicts quickly. Consistent, collaborative effort can turn diverse teaching teams into highly effective, cohesive units.
