How can you help students see the value of vocational education?

I find that vocational education doesn't get the credit it deserves. While educational institutions hold career fairs and university fairs they fail to focus on vocational education to a great extent. Not every learner is equipped to go to Ivy league and other top universities. Some, especially those who are not straight A students may be looking for something that is more suited to their level of learning and the skills they possess. Vocational learning should be part of the curriculum in schools and colleges and students should be allowed the option of taking up a vocational course that makes them ready for employment once they are out in the world.

Vocational education and training can't be effective without linking it with real world. In additional to that, curreclume has to be design by actual professional practical.

When it comes to select their course in secondry high school(15-18years teens in Iran,where I live and teach)they face big challenges to find their goals in life journey as well as their insights and inspirations.i try to make them familier with themselves,maybe ask them how you can make life easier and more beautiful for yourself with your courses?and welcome open-minded answers with smiles.sometimes silly answers would prove better????

First of all, removing vocational as a term from the industrial age and use the term Career and Technical Education. The term is outdated. As a former principal CTE Career Center/CTE school within a large comprehensive school, I take this quite seriously. But aside from this, I would like to add the importance of labor market research to understand not just the future of global work but local work so as to align the appropriated CTE programs, internships, externships, and curriculum with students in secondary schools. This is key which also reminds us of the importance of leaders to engage in relational and social capital.

Giving students a range of vocational educational programs that are uniquely tailored to their needs and passions will not only resonate with them, but will spark the creation of new ideas and developments. In turn, this will: - Allow them to feel heard and empowered - Create room for willingness to participate - Develop students that are equipped for diverse workforces - Ignite a chain effect of young people that are vocationally educated, inviting other students to participate. In addition, the accredited instructors for these programs will be more educated and equipped in dealing with a diverse quality and range of vocational opportunities.

Students who finish those rigorous programs, have the credentials and training they need to get started right away in their chosen career path. Not only do the students feel confident in their abilities, but the employers themselves know that they have made a solid choice in their new hire and can count on them to begin excelling in the position quickly.

In my knowledge and understanding Vocational Skills programmes are directly related to leadership development. in this learner understands his role in society and his contribution to society.

In nearly any industry, the importance of a strong network can play a direct role in finding a job and building a successful career. Connections and relationships can help people find new jobs, learn about new opportunities, and have chances to continue their education and build more career-based skills. Through a vocation-based education, students have an excellent opportunity to build a strong network that will enhance their learning experience and the rest of their professional careers. With a vocation-based training program, students work more closely with their fellow students and their trainers on their coursework.

Mentor and mentee program is one of the most effective ways to learn and experience in the industry. One of them I have learnt is inter-generational interaction.

Connection to Industry and Community partners is one of the pillars of essential design elements under PBL. It is very essential for the subject learned to be real tangible and factual. Gone are the days of theoretical learning. The truth is realtime practical support and guidance builds experiences that make the education stick. PBL works!

Connections with industry is important show to a career pathway. For many it becomes the pathway to a work journey that empowers and motivates

Vocational education today is about building badass skills and landing real-world gigs. Sadly but realistically, it needs a massive media/social media campaign involving multiple celebrities across various careers and generations pointing out to all ages that the vast majority of qualifications involve and benefit from a vocational focus- doctors/vets/lawyers/teachers etc all have to do some “on the job” training to qualify. The word vocational needs a total rebrand to stop it feeling like a 2 tier and sitting “below” an academic qualification- they are the same and most academic degrees involve vocational work, people just don’t know.

Students have more opportunities to get to know their professors. With skills-based training, students work more directly with their trainers. The hands-on opportunities they have to work during their coursework let them complete projects, engage with work tasks, and learn specialized techniques under the direct supervision of the trainer. Trainers are there to provide support and students have opportunities to speak with them and engage with more one-to-one time. This builds relationships and can help students find professional mentors for the transition to the business world. Through internship opportunities, students expand this relationship horizon into the work world, even before graduation.

As part of community engagement, many parents and grandparents volunteer for vocational skills programs. Even in Finland schools, we have witnessed grannies visiting the school to teach traditional knitting to primary schools (Age 10-14) kids. This was more popular amongst boys.

In my experience, students already have areas of interest and talents that translate in career fields naturally. Leveraging students voice and providing them with choice in both experiences and pathways ensures students are empowered to pursue vocational options with confidence. The future of work is evolving and young people deserve to be in the driver’s seat of opportunity.

I think this goes well with number two. When students are able to see a showcase of diverse options and opportunities, they are also empowered to make informed choices and decisions. One way students can actively be empowered to make informed choices is through peer-peer mentorship and counseling. When students see mentors of their age group in a career or educational path that they aspire to be in, it makes connection easier for them. This is because they can easily relate to this peer or mentor and then do not feel intimidated about their aspirations, but instead empowered. Peer-peer mentorship also helps to accurately assess their strengths, interests, and needs.

Project Based Learning!That's the answer that my sister and i have found for all forms of learning. From their formative years children learn through copying from their environment. That's how we learn to talk, walk, sit, stand, eat, we see it around us in as much as innate instincts are there. So As we grow older we learn better to play and relate with other humans. Student choice and voice is key. From interest that cannot be build from convincing. That's how i've learnt what i know so far.

Students already see value to the things they valued. As educators, we need to help them find the right match. Vocational education can be soft skills as well. For example, learn to be more confidence and stepping out of comfort zone.

Promoting a culture of respect and appreciation for vocational education involves various approaches that highlight its importance and value.
