How can you help students build a strong academic foundation?

I've found that students become more active learners when they are made more aware of how to take control of the learning process. This is helped tremendously when students are guided to look at their own specific behaviors in learning activities like reading assignments, listening to lectures, preparing for exams, and even interacting with fellow students in the learning process. For many students this will be the first time they actually examined their own learning behaviors and realize that they can adjust those behaviors to become more powerful and efficient learners.

In my experience communication is key! The lack of communication skills from students is very alarming. Take a communications course whether it is a local course or something online. Learn how to communicate properly and don't be afraid to do so. Instructors want you to speak to them as it is in the best interest of you both to talk about it!

Encouraging grit and leadership, as well as determination can happen in the classes that students take in high school-- as early as 9th grade! Having the right guidance early on is key to developing an array of courses that will elevate a student's writing ability, critical thinking skills, and the aquisition of a second (or third!) language. I love assisting future college students with these challenges!

Well, helping students build a strong academic foundation is like teaching them to ride a bike – you start with training wheels and lots of patience! First, you provide a sturdy frame of fundamental knowledge, kind of like the bicycle frame. Then, you give them the support they need to keep their balance, which is a good teacher's guidance. As they pedal along, you make sure they steer clear of potholes (that's avoiding common pitfalls in learning), and when they wobble, you offer a gentle push back on track (that's some extra help when they stumble). Soon enough, they're off on their own, riding confidently with their newfound knowledge. Just remember, don't forget the helmet – because education should always be a safe adventure! ??♀?????

When I learned from books and lectures, I would remember the information. However, I needed to learn how to implement the lessons. When I lead training or teaching, I use activities, stories, role playing, case studies and more because it provides opportunities to engage. That leads to learning the skills & concepts, plus how to use them.

Over the years I have seen that active learning methods like hands-on experiments and problem-solving activities helps engineering students develop a deeper understanding of complex concepts and principles. Through active learning, students can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects to solve real world problems, enhancing their understanding and retention.

Crital thinking and concept development must be a foundation course for whichever level of education. We must teach our students, how to be open minded, and ask the why? Students will not be able to navigate the academic circle without understanding the WHY? in what they do. Secondly, is entrepreneurship. This is been taught the wrong way for students to understand ,the course is for those that wants to start their own businesses. This foundation course must be taught as a way of life. The principles of risk taking, managing resources, managing people etc must be incorporated so students can understand ,either you work for yourself or for someone else, your mindset must be the same- this is my business!!!

Students spend time (sometimes significant amount) "memorizing" information, just long enough to get a grade. Of course, this doesn't help them to retain as significant amount of the information or how to actually use the information. My belief is that it is necessary for them to have the information, but then understand how they can integrate with other courses or how the specific topic will help them in the future. The only/best method for this is to encourage active learning. Either by giving a specific case-based topic, a group project with larger scope questions or something as simple as a "game" that forces them to make contact with their peers. The most difficult thing is to balance time between giving the basics and active learning.

Building a strong academic foundation is crucial for students' success in school and beyond. Here are some effective ways to help students achieve this. When I discuss strengths and weaknesses with students, it isn't within the context of leadership development. It is couched in their personal development and how increased self-awareness and knowledge can help them personally. As a strengths practitioner, I promote understanding talents and how those talents can be better applied to goals and outcomes. I create space for others to point out when someone is utilizing their talents, and I provide opportunities for self-reflection as a regular part of program assessment. Keeping these ideas out front in both training and programming helps students develop greater metacognition.

I 100% agree with this I think allowing people to develop their own thinking as the most important part of education. For education to be effective, I think it should allow students to question everything and to investigate everything for themselves and judge for themselves what they understand what they don't. Think of Albert Einstein in a school that allowed him to question everything that came up and where the teacher had fruitful conversations with them without forcing them to memorise everything. I believe it's really one of the things that contributed to the genius he became.

Students should get in the habit of taking notes. Doing this forces them to listen and focus; their minds won't wander. Writing down what they heard forces them to summarize, in their own words, what they heard. If they cannot summarize what they heard, they should ask the teacher to clarify what they said. At night, students should review what they wrote during the class, and come to the next class with questions if needed.

Help them develop metacognitive skills by encouraging self-awareness of their learning process. Teach them to set goals, plan their studies, monitor their understanding, and adjust their strategies when necessary. Metacognition enhances their ability to reflect on their learning, identify areas for improvement, and become more effective and independent learners.

Whether we are teaching in person or virtually, every individual needs to feel like they belong and they must trust that they can speak up. Intending to do that is very different than doing it. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Thus, we have to be adaptable, agile AND open. Developing a relationship with each student is a great start. Open communication on an individual level provides a strong foundation. It is important to offer opportunities for group discussions, breakout groups, AND I always include opportunities to talk one-on-one with me. The more I know, the more I can provide a wide variety of activities that will accommodate the unique needs of every individual.

It is critical that students are connected to the institution in order to be academically successful. Higher Education is full of ups and downs, but if there is a sense of belonging and a personal connection, the level of perseverance is greatly increased. In terms of help-seeking and retention, if a student has to tell someone, literally anyone that they are going to drop out, it becomes less likely that they do. This can be an advisor, instructor, member of a club, roommate, whoever. So long as they have a relationship with the person, they are less likely to drop out than if they are disconnected and need only complete a form, send an email or call an office line.

It is important that students feel a connection to the institution early in their college experience. Tailoring connection experiences to highlight the unique differences in the student body, bringing in faculty who can speak to how they connect best with students in the classroom, and offering insights from students who are close to completing their degrees will help to strengthen and encourage community building across disciplines.

One point I emphasize to both undergraduate and graduate students is that grades should not become an obsession. While they are part of the journey, the real goal is learning. Focusing too much on exams can detract from that purpose. The fear of exams often drives students to optimize their study time in unproductive ways, get distracted by secondary concerns, and—most importantly—miss out on enjoying their classes. When learning becomes enjoyable, retention and understanding naturally follow.

We can help students build a strong academic foundation by inspiring them to explore a number of diverse spheres and follow their leanings for a few of them. If we are able to develop in them a passion for the courses of their liking, it will prepare a lifelong learning process for them. It is like a battery operated toy car which reaches its destination on its own after being started. If the students are in love with their educational program, they will make it their career,thereby enjoying their professional journey and excelling in their job. This journey will be facilitated in early years If we recognise and reward their small successes and create a congenial academic ambience throughout.

I interact with my students regularly. One thing I have found very useful is simplifying the SWOT (strength , weakness, opportunity, threat) analysis to the students. This can help to build a strong academic foundation.

Children learn perfectly naturally and effectively from birth onwards using inbuild cognitive abilities. Most already have a passion for learning through sheer curiosity about the environment in which they find themselves. Some lose their love of learning in the more structured environment of formal education settings however, so we have to find ways of still arousing their curiosity, getting them involved in their own learning, and providing opportunities for success. A passion for learning comes from the joy of achieving success and a desire to feel that over and over again. It's important to be inclusive in the way we address this, making sure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Dans mon expérience, l’apprentissage est grandement facilité s’il s’accompagne d’exemples, de cas ou d’anecdotes, qui permettent d’introduire ou d’illustrer les concepts présentés pendant un cours. Comme le disait Aristote, la tragédie est plus philosophique que l’histoire.

In my opinion, if the student understands the purpose of the subject, the reason why the relevant subject is part of the curriculum, how the subject serves his general education or how much it is in the function of facilitating learning in other subjects, then it is very more predisposed to follow the lesson. Also, combining theory with practice, or the active involvement of the student during the lesson, makes the lesson simpler and more understandable.

A strong Academic foundation rests upon a student's capacity to comprehend, grasp and apply. A student's ability can be increased by expansion of their awareness and expanded brain functioning. A bigger bucket holds more naturally! When students experience their own consciousness, their own self, through the easy practice of Transcendental Meditation, the expanded state of self awareness and the experience of bliss and creativity is not just during the practice of meditation, but in every aspect of their life including Academics. The deeper experience of consciousness and being in the Transcendental state enables them to make better neurotic connections apart from other benefits resulting in a robust foundation for Academics and for life.

To build a strong academic foundation, students need to make the most out of their courses from day one. Many are not yet prepared to do this. I taught for 12 years and found that, while students continued to be capable of learning, there was a general decline in my students' ability to think. When you learn, you are acquiring knowledge, but thinking involves processing that knowledge, comparing it to your own experience and using it to raise questions. Building a strong academic foundation requires the ability to learn and the ability to think. So to build a strong academic foundation, I would suggest that students need to learn how to think and how to communicate those thoughts in writing.
