How can you help someone develop the skills they need to succeed as an entrepreneur?

Grit. You can't measure Grit. Your dreams will dictate how big your work ethic must become in order to make them a reality. Once your understand your dreams, then you reverse engineer the income and hours it is going to take to make it happen. The bigger the dream, the more work hours and resistance you will encounter on the path to that goal. My advice to any entrepreneur is to realize that some people will think you are insane and will try to talk you out of your dreams. Ignore them. You will pick up new friends and more positive people along the way. Finally, never feel like you are missing out on something just because you worked hard and missed a few events. Trust me; missing a few things in order to become better is worth it.

Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey doesn’t require knowing everything from the start. Much like learning to fly, the process itself will help you build your capabilities. As you progress, you’ll find that resources and individuals willing to support your vision will emerge. The key is to take the first steps with confidence and openness to growth. Trust in your ability to learn and adapt as you go, and maintain faith in your vision and yourself. This approach can attract the right people and opportunities to help your business soar.

Develop a strong work ethic if you want to be an entrepreneur. Get up each morning ready to put in at least 8 hours, usually more. Sick days, personal days, and mental health days are all unpaid so only take them when absolutely necessary. Have clear goals. Write down all your goals, pick the very most important one. Focus all of your energy on visualizing how to reach that one goal. Write down specific attainable milestones that lead to that goal. Put your milestones in the right order and get to work. Experience a setback? Dust yourself off and get back to work. Problem to be solved? Devise two solutions and pick the better; get back to work. No matter what, don't stop; keep working. Goal reached? Repeat the process with a new goal.

Fail quicker. I love this mindset because it normalizes failure and gets us out of perfectionism. The faster we fail, the faster we learn and improve.

To help someone develop the skills needed for entrepreneurial success, I emphasize three core strategies: cultivating a strong mentorship network within your industry, assembling a team of passionate individuals who can eventually lead in your place, and setting strategic, achievable goals. I believe it’s about equipping aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools and mindset to not only envision their goals but also to pragmatically achieve them.

Sink-or-swim responsibility. If you want to be prepared for entrepreneurism, you need to be familiar with the sting of failure. We need to put both aspiring entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs in positions where they feel the pain of mistakes and failures. Then they need to feel the thrill of wins. Too often, the only positive reinforcement we give team members are our raises and promotions. That teaches Office politics, not entrepreneurism.

While theoretical knowledge is important, practical experience is invaluable. As an entrepreneur, you can encourage someone to start small projects or side businesses that align with their interests. These mini ventures serve as a low-risk environment for testing theories and learning from the outcomes.

True learning should be reciprocal. Acknowledging this is fundamental to your own development and thus learning a new skill. Learning can often be thought of as academic but some of the biggest learnings in my working life, covering being a refuse collector and warehouse worker, and working at most UK government departments including the UK Cabinet Office, have been practical learnings. Seize every opportunity you get - and carry a note book all of the time.

One very simple, yet crucial, task: ask them to sell something. Entrepreneurship really does boil down to sales and people skills, and the only way to improve it is through practice.

A great way to learn and build strong entrepreneurial skills is to identify mentors who are very successful in this arena, and learn from them. Job shadow as much as possible with them and utilize them as a resource to “bounce ideas off of” and get their feedback of how they would suggest the approach to an opportunity. Job shadowing and building a strong mentor network is one of the most effective things you can do to improve your entrepreneurial effectiveness. Also read regularly books and articles from very successful entrepreneurs. In addition, become a “student” in learning from your mistakes and successes in your leadership and entrepreneurial journey. Get comfortable taking well calculated risks to pursue new opportunities.

I believe the most crucial element is the manner in which feedback is conveyed to entrepreneurs. Given their involvement in a dynamic and direct environment, they anticipate receiving straightforward feedback, as opposed to ambiguous or indirect corporate-style feedback.

Entrepreneurship, particularly in the virtual space, can be isolating. Recognize the power of a support system. I've sought coaching and mentoring to illuminate blind spots and guide me through challenges. Whether it's family, friends, or online communities, having a reliable network provides invaluable feedback and emotional support. Don't hesitate to lean on others, ask questions, and gain diverse perspectives. Building a robust support system is not just a professional strategy; it's a lifeline in the entrepreneurial journey.

Go, meet people, learn from them, and remember, the person who can change your life might be someone you don't even know yet. Networking helps you develop communication skills, confidence, build trust and rapport. And also don't hesitate to sell: Sell your ideas, sell your offerings, sell your skills, whatever you have sell it shamelessly. For entrepreneurs, networking and sales skills are key.

The network is not about connecting and collecting business cards; we are all different, and networking enables us to understand other perspectives, ideas, and thinking on a given topic. Like multiple photographers shooting a scene but producing dramatically different results.

Networking is a big step for growing your business! Share ideas, ask for advice, and make friends. It's not just a work thing; it's a way of thinking that helps entrepreneurs succeed by turning challenges into opportunities.

Networking can take many forms: sending LinkedIn requests, talking at events, joining colleagues at meetings, trying a few days in a different department or organisation. Regardless of form, remember that networking is about finding new people, new offerings, new products and new ways of working. The best networking I do comes from listening to knew people or finding out about new markets and approaching both the individual who talked, but also their team, supporters and stakeholders (internal, connected and external to them).

Failure must be seen as a normal part of any new process and development and needs to be re-framed as a learning opportunity. Working on our mindset to remove the negativity associated with failure is a core foundation to developing ourselves as successful entrepreneurs. Remember, we only REALLY fail when we quit because when we try something new we either get the result we want or we get the lesson we need.

Creativity helps in evaluating and implementing ideas to solve a problem. Entrepreneurs need to know problems solving skills and critical thinking which can be improved by analysing arguments and practising diversified thinking. Diversified thinking helps entrepreneurs to be curious which improves creativity and results provides initiative to experiment and take risks.

There will be days when everything seems to go wrong, and that’s okay. It’s part of the journey. Just make sure to be resilient and adaptable . Always ready to pivot or adjust your strategies in response to new information or changing market conditions.

One thing I started doing early on was treating my life like I was a pro athlete. If I needed to build something big I needed to be in top shape physically, emotionally, and mentally. It really helped me get through the anxious and stressful days while also being mentally sharp in those first few years!

Drawing from my entrepreneurial journey, I've found that resilience is the bedrock of success. By embracing challenges as learning opportunities you're able to bounce back from setbacks with newfound wisdom and build the mental strength needed to weather the highs and lows of business ownership. Stay curious, be open to change, and proactively seek opportunities to learn and pivot. Cultivate a mindset that welcomes evolution, and you'll find yourself not just surviving but thriving in the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship.

One things I’ve found helpful is to keep my ‘Why’ to the forefront of everything I do. It’s essential because you won’t always wake up motivated, but your ‘why’ will make sure you always wake up disciplined. Lack of motivation will make you not want to get up and do what needs to be done, but discipline will make sure you do it anyway.

Don't couple your business efforts to your personal worth. The things that make you an aggressive businessman are not the things that make you a good person. Real business is many times antithetical to those things we value in social exchange and life.

I think the most important thing an entrepreneur must do is to make sure that they’re always unapolagetically themselves. You are your best version when you’re yourself. People can copy your product or your service but they can’t copy how you make people feel. Go out everyday and make choices that you want to make, stop following the herd. That will give you a great chance at winning the game of entrepreneurship!

Through the roadblocks, setbacks and learning curves, it can feel defeating at times leading you to second guess your business and become unmotivated. Being clear with your why and your who is crucial to lean on during these times. Ask yourself, why does this business initiative matter. What was the reason you started it? Who does this benefit? What value will come to them if you push through? What legacy will your efforts leave behind? How are you leaving a positive mark with your loved ones, the people your work with and the world? Think beyond you and lead more like a servant of how your business is meant to help others will help set the motivational foundation for navigating all it takes to become a successful entrepreneur.

The top skills entrepreneurs need are resilience to bounce back from setbacks, adaptability to pivot strategies, creativity for innovation, strong communication for pitching ideas and building partnerships, and financial literacy for managing finances effectively.

The number one thing a leader, teacher, or coach can do to build entrepreneurship skills is to make failure okay. Unfortunately, our education system and "pop star, movie star" culture teaches us that perfection is the goal. Perfection is fleeting and exceedingly rare. In my opinion, perfection doesn't exist and is the enemy of excellence. Second, stop playing the role of firefighter, cleaning up the messes and mistakes of your team members. "Oh just let me do it!" No one benefits when the boss doesn't allow team members to recover and learn from their missteps. Play the role of a coach. If a player falls down, teach them how to get back up. Put education and training opportunities in place to allow the player to learn and grow.

Be yourself. Practice what you preach. Honesty is the best policy. Past: learn from it but let it go ie do NOT dwell on it. Have paitance. Make a 100% effort but have no expectation.
