One of the biggest mistakes I see mid-career job seekers make is trying to "fit" themselves into a job description rather than knowing their strengths and why they are valuable. Job seekers need to know why their skills are valuable to an employer. Additionally, they need to know how to apply those skills to HELP someone in that new role. Ask yourself: - What are you great at doing? - Why is that skill valuable? - Why does someone need me to do that skill well for them and their company? We all have skill gaps, but when you are actively seeking new employment, you must leverage your skills that are strengths and of value to your future employer.

Never assume - if you do not understand fully the question - Ask

Traditional advice is to research the company and people with whom you will be meeting. Prepare your "elevator pitch" and show up with enthusiasm. Here's why that won't work: Every other candidate does exactly that. Here's how to stand out: 1. Set an agenda early - "I'm sure you have questions for me as I do for you. To ensure we make the most of our time together would it be a crazy idea for me to kick off with my top 3 questions? Them: "Sure!" You: Great! Q1: "How would someone in this role get fired in the first 90 days?" Q2: "How would I know I'm going a great job in this position?" Q3: "What's the #1 reason not to work here?" Conversation flows from their answers. Tie your responses to suit what you now know they need.

Visualization is a powerful interview prep exercise: 1. Picture the room. Picture who you’re speaking with and how you’re both seated. What else do you see in the room? 2. Imagine your posture and how you want to present yourself. 3. What is the most important story you want to tell? How will you make an impact in the role? How will you articulate this? 4. What questions can you anticipate receiving? How will you maintain composure and answer them effectively? 5. What will make the hiring manager excited? What will be memorable? How will you show this?

Thank-you notes (emails) are table stakes. What you include with that note (email) is what matters. Don't say this: "Thanks for your time today. I am really excited by the opportunity and hope to progress to the next round. Have a great day!" Say this, instead: "I appreciate you outlining the (challenges faced or initiatives to drive forward) that the incumbent will be required to deliver in this role. I've attached a 'Proof-of-Potential' slide deck outlining exactly how I will approach those (challenges/initiatives). Feel free to share the deck with your team and let me know if I can clarify any points within. I'm keeping (company) on my short list as I continue interviewing in (same industry) this week. Talk soon!"

Job search is emotionally draining, especially for people who have a high pressure to get a new job fast. During my coaching sessions I often talk with clients about their mindset. If the mindset is poorely managed it will get them further from achieving their goal - a new job. Many people often underestimate this part and focus to much on only practical things.

The application process is frustrating. Even for excellent candidates, it may require dozens and dozens of applications and several interviews to get an offer. A few tips for managing emotions and mindset: 1. Remain focused on what you really want and what the benefits will be once you land the job. Spreading oneself too thin with applications, such as spending real time and effort applying for jobs that aren't really of interest, is extra draining because there's no enthusiasm built into the process. 2. Despite the frustration of getting an interview but not an offer, remember the positives. If a company chooses to interview you, they see you as a legitimate, competent candidate. Sometimes it just comes down to luck. Remember your value.

Draw attention to the success of building soft yet durable skills and making genuine human connections, which are often overshadowed by the success of landing a new job. The impact of the first 90 days in a new role is built on the foundation of all the learnings and losses in the researching, networking, applying, interviewing, and negotiating process that preceded it. The redirection in previous rejections lead to this recent opportunity. Empower them to take the discipline and hope that got them this new job and invest it in setting up a sturdy springboard of training, communicating, and relationship-building in this next stage of their career.
