I found that by telling the student what she was aiming for in the English course, and by breaking the teaching up into easy-to-understand units, she found the information given was much easier to understand and absorb, and her results echoed this.

Don’t wait for campus-wide assessments, give a short quiz to your students to gain insight throughout the semester and quarter so you can adjust teaching modes to teach learning objectives more effectively. Your students will appreciate the thoughtfulness, what to perform better and ultimately, succeed more in your course. Keep the student top of mind.

Assessment and evaluation can make or break a learning experience. 1. Students need to know if they're heading in the right direction. (Needs to accurately align with goals.) When students see growth, it contributes to their motivation too. 2. Teachers need proof that students are not merely "parroting" answers, but actually learning. I do this by evaluating in a different format than they use to learn. This requires "mental translation" which requires understanding. 3. Assessment and evaluation create value. The choice of what to evaluate shows what is important by its presence on the evaluation and the weighting of the evaluation gives the value a quantity.

In the current era of artificial intelligence (AI), students have unprecedented access to AI tools like ChatGPT and similar platforms. These tools can quickly provide detailed answers, which raises the concern of whether students are genuinely learning or merely extracting answers for their assignments. In light of these concerns, it is recommended that we reintroduce the VIVA-VOC, or oral examination, as a pivotal part of assessment. But can we use an AI tool for oral examination? This concept is intriguing and becomes increasingly feasible with advancements in speech recognition and natural language processing.

The ultimate goal of assessment and evaluation is to improve teaching and learning, and thus it is imperative to use the data to inform decisions that boost student outcomes. For instance, you can use the data to recognize gaps, strengths, and challenges in student learning, adjust teaching strategies and materials, provide feedback and support to students, and celebrate successes.
