Before starting an executive coaching engagement first you have to make sure whether the student or mentee or client is ready. As the saying goes,"When the student is ready,the teacher arrives". So make sure about the readiness of the client based on the following evaluation : 1) Motivation 2) Committment 3) Openess 4) Willingness to change The above excercise is essential inorder to identify any potential barriers or resistance. Further you can ask for client's expectations from the coaching & also whether they are willing to invest interms of time,energy & resources. Most important, whether they are prepared to do differently. Based on your client's expectations,coach can have a plan in place & implement it accordingly as a team.

Wichtig ist es, dass ich gemeinsam mit dem Coaching-Kunden erarbeite, was sich durch das Coaching ?ndern soll, wie der gewünschte Zielzustand sein soll. Wie will sich der Kunde dann fühlen? Wie arbeitet er dann? Wie gestalten sich die Beziehungen zu Kollegen und Kunden? Dieses Zielbild sollte so pr?zise wie m?glich sein. Die SMART Formel hilft hierbei. Dabei würde ich das A immer mit Attraktiv übersetzten. Was macht es für den Kunden attraktiv an seinem Thema zu arbeiten? Wenn ich das in der ersten Sitzung gut herausarbeite, dann gibt es in der Regel wenig Demotivation.

If the change is imposed, we resist the change. The main obstacle in executive coaching is to align expectations of the company that hires the Coach with the expectations of the person that will receive the coaching sessions (coachee), that many times are not the same. And that produces rejection when coachee feels it as an imposition. The best tool of the Coach is the question. So first, let’s ask the coachee for his/her real expectations about the coaching process and to let him/her realize how those ones are aligned with the company expectations. That would be the way to align all the stakeholders and have a success coaching process.

The coach must help the coachee, through questions, to define the goal of the coaching process (SMART); the purpose of that goal (what he/she wants to reach it for); and how he/she will feel more comfortable during the sessions. This is the first moment to start building trust and defining the roles and responsibilities. The coachee must feel that the coach is there just for him/her; must feel that the coach trusts him/her and his/her capabilities; and must understand that the coach is there to accompany him/her into the trip to reach the goal but that he/she is the only responsible of the results. It is highly recommended that all those points are written down into a signed contract/alliance between coach and coachee.

Willingness to undergo Executive coaching denotes client's willingness to change and expand. Priority will be to define the metrics for growth on the basis of mutual discussions. Some areas where clients need quick results are- HR, customer service, sales,marketing and of course revenue. Communication is important arena-one can agree on phone, email, meeting protocols to be followed by the client. It’s important to know that coach is responsible for process, and coachee is responsible for an effect. But there is still a need to save a room for a natural development of process. Too strict rules may limit the creativity and flow of thoughts. As coaching is about releasing what is hidden, we need to have fertile ground for new ideas.

Promote mutual accountability: Set clear expectations about roles and responsibilities. Incorporate ongoing feedback: solicit and provide feedback on a regular and constructive basis. By integrating these practices into the coaching process, client expectations are regulated.

Coaching process is trip between where you currently are and where you want to be; between who you currently are and who you want to become. As in any other trip, you can have an initial plan about the intermediate steps to reach your destination. But, as any other trip, you may need to make changes in the path or want to change the way to go (by car, by plane, walking…) The coach will be there to help the coachee to identify the new path/new intermediate step to reach the goal; to hold him/her when the strength decreases, in case that the sight is blurred or got blind. The presence and the question are the most powerful tools of the coach for those situations.

In my experience, the best connections with my clients come from the ability to have empathy and understanding but also push them in a way that helps them grow. The worst thing to do as a coach is to leave them in the same position as when you started with them. They are trusting you to help them see the "gap" or to see a different perspective that could help elevate or even move into a new season of life.
