How can you handle rejection or criticism of your photography portfolio?

La clave es desvincularte emocionalmente una vez presentas un trabajo. Cuando muestro algo que he creado, siento que deja de ser mío, y paso a juzgarlo como si fuera la idea de otro, así es más fácil ser imparcial y estar abierto a modificaciones. Esto no evita que defienda o ataque las creaciones (mías y de otros) con total seguridad si confío en ello y está bien argumentado. Lo que mi ética profesional no me permite es callarme o dar la razón simplemente para contentar a alguien. Por eso, cuando criticamos o defendemos una idea, hay que estar muy seguro de que el que habla no es tu ego. De lo contrario tu criterio dejará de tener valor.

Lidar o que as outras pessoas pensam é super válido temos que ter consciência de aprender que as vezes a forma que fazemos ou aprendemos pode evoluir sempre. A todo instante é o tempo todo.

The reality is that not everyone will like your work. That does not necessarily mean they don’t like you. There are definitely times when I’ve looked at competition winners and wondered what the judges saw. I’ve also had the experience of others preferring images if mine I’ve considered substandard over my top pic. You will never please everyone so don’t sweat it.

Handling portfolio criticism is crucial for growth. I received valuable feedback from a family member in digital marketing, critiquing editing, angles, and copyright. Instead of taking it personally, I embraced the opportunity for improvement and learned two key lessons: 1. Don't Take It Personally: Separate emotions from feedback to view it objectively. The critique is about the art, not you. 2. Take It with a Grain of Salt: Feedback is subjective. Consider suggestions but filter them through your artistic vision. Embracing criticism is vital for a stronger portfolio. My advice to photographers is to welcome critiques with an open mind. They come from genuine care, fostering growth in your craft.

In the early stages of my photographic career, I was particularly sensitive to negative criticism. However, over time, I came to realize that any form of feedback, when taken seriously and acted upon, can be instrumental in personal growth. In fact, criticism is an essential tool for improvement. For this reason, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all critics, regardless of the nature of their assessment.

I would ask yourself: “Why is it important to you to get the reaction you think you want from those criticizing your work?” If you love something that you’ve captured and presented, I would give that a lot of weight. And let’s say you sold a print of your work for $1 million. Would you care as much about what the people said who criticized your work? Not that money is the most important thing. It’s just often used as a barometer for what is good (examples include Picasso paintings, hit songs, popular movies, etc.) I often look back at the criticisms of very popular people, like the impressionists in France, and study how they were criticized, only to be regarded as great artists 20-50 years later (and in some cases, weeks later).

Learn from criticisms, but don’t live by them. If you are having so called experts judge your work remember a couple things, one judgement is opinion, and if that opinion is from an expert consider it but don’t live by it. Hopefully it helps you see Your work from Another’s eyes but your art is your art.

As long as the feedback is constructive then there's always something to take from it. If the work was commissioned for a specific brief and the client is explaining how it doesn't meet the ask then learning to accept that with curiosity will make hearing it way easier. If the feedback is just negative or bordering on just being rude then ignore it, those are the opinions worth shutting out.

Feed Back mesmo negativo ele é válido. Porque as nossa vida n?o é estática e temos que aprender todos os dias. Aprender com os erros é uma virtude.

My experience is this: if you value your work show it to those whom it will impact the most. There is no such thing as an all-accepting audience. Someone will hate it out of jealousy, spite or just because their own emotions are out-of-wack. Recognize who your peers are and politely ask for recommendations on improvement if that's your intention. Never allow those who have never demonstrated an ounce of creativity to alter who you are, what you create or where you plan to go. You might think the unimaginative would be able to give constructive critiques but that is not the case. Always trust your gut first. And lastly don't take it personal. I know that's the hardest one - I do. You are more than approval.

Regardless of feedback, evaluating your work and looking for improvements is a must for any creative professional. Look at the work of your peers and critically analyse what you like, what you don't like and aim to bring in different elements to make your own work keep improving.

There is always a bit of truth in the feedback given. Assess the truth and learn from it Use this as a learning moment to improve your craft.

Siempre hay que pedir opiniones de colegas y no tan colegas, la sinceridad es necesaria por mas que no nos guste deben ser críticos a la hora de dar una devolución, no siempre podemos escuchar solo los comentarios buenos. de ahí es donde mas se aprende, de la devolución sincera.

Impulsar la creatividad no ha de ser nunca copiar, la nuevas ideas han de ser eso, nuevas. Si se parecen demasiado a las de otros, eso no hablará demasiado bien de tí como creativo. Mantén cierta distancia con todo lo que ves y escuchas, pues de lo contrario acabarás siendo un clon de alguien.

Use apps that allow you a text to image path and try to visualise your idea with the help of the Artificial Intelligence. It's a way to visualise your own creativity and it might surprise you.

El éxito de un creativo es tener un portafolio que genere la confianza necesaria para que alguien te escoja y confíe en tí. Eso ya es un triunfo.

We're all naturally inclined to zero in on the negative feedback because it has way more of an emotional resonance. Make sure to embrace and accept good feedback and allow yourself to take compliments. I find looking back at old projects and recognising how much your work has improved a good tactic to reinforce motivation and remind you you're not as bad as you think.

In my experience, this is what seems to be particularly rewarding: look back at former achievements, studies, campaigns, you name it, and tell about them, share them. In blogs, here on LinkedIn, wherever they help you grow, remember the long road you took, reinterpret your present.... Celebrate is not about bragging, it's about sharing your satisfaction with people who similarly support you in your professional path.

You don't like everybody, stop trying to be liked by everybody. Creative work is meant to be subjective, if everyone liked the same thing the world would be boring. You're going to get people who don't like what you do and that's ok but you shouldn't give it more attention than it deserves.

Also, use criticism as motivation to hone your skills through workshops, courses, or self-study. Maintain a positive mindset, viewing rejection as a natural part of the creative process and a stepping stone to improvement. Document your progress and changes you make based on feedback, as this can be encouraging and informative for future projects. Two steps are very important: 1. Context, add a frame to the negative feedback we receive about our portfolio: analyze from where this reading is made, what are the referents, expectations, and preferences of the person issuing this opinion. And 2. The consequence: What is the benefit for this person of giving a negative comment? Does he/she intend to devalue my work for some reason or is it just an opinion that differs from its personal and subjective taste? The final tip (applicable to many others) is not to react but to respond. Decide what is the most elegant, integrated and intelligent response in these cases.

You can manage it, in a constructive way, as a feedback. For example, if your briefcase is criticized instead of think oh no, or feel bad for that, maybe you can take it, as an advantage. Advantage? Yes! You will lost less time analizing or trying to discover which was your mistake, with the critics you already know it. After, my suggestion is just accept it in a polite way, LISTEN very well and then analize alone and sincerely with yourself, should I consider this critic? Yes? No? If it is yes, so, how improve? If it is not, just don't consider it. Sometimes, some people criticize when don't understand your work, and that doesn't mean you work is wrong.
