This can only be achieved if you ask for clarity. Also, keep a record of your accomplishments. Use a shared document or project management tool to log completed projects, successful initiatives, and any positive feedback or recognition received from colleagues or clients. This can help in the long run during appraisals or when requesting a promotion.

Ask the tough questions about what it takes to get promoted remotely. You'll want to understand if there is a built-in bias toward remote progression and uncover what it will take to jump those hurdles, if they do exist. And even if they exist, it doesn't mean you're stuck - you just need to know what you're up against so you can knock their socks off!

I think, its important to understand that any 'change' brings with it a host of challenges which, if thought through, could be converted into opportunities. The same is true with working in a remote work environment in which 'results' or 'outcomes' matter more than anything else. Hence, keep a tracker of your progress against the expected outcomes and share a weekly, fortnightly or monthly tracker with your superior. Maintain discipline in replying to emails. Be agile in your approach: Create an open and inclusive communication environment so that no one is afraid to ask questions, there are no stupid questions, there are only questions. Feel comfortable challenging existing concepts or procedures that no longer serve mandated or business goals. Transparency and sharing: Work with complete transparency with each other and communicate the good things as well as the bad in a transparent and respectful way so that there is a mutual desire to strive to solve the problem.

Something I learned is that reputation is the best key to get visibility. Being conscious about the self branding and the image you want to create about yourself are important while building your "internal business card" ; naturally people will find their way to get introduced and connect. It's about the value you bring and the difference you make.

From experience, never shying away from projects or sponsored events has always helped me stay seen. As remote workers, you can always build your network by strategically identifying people who can contribute to your career growth, reach out to them, and plan lunch, coffee seat-outs, TGIF(Thank God is Friday) hangouts and sell yourself to them(soft skills/hobbies). One of the best pieces of advice I’d give to people looking to advance as a remote employee is to be intentional about being visible. No matter how skilled you are, if nobody knows who you are, it won’t matter. While this is important in any work environment, it requires a different set of skills and a significantly greater level of intentionality. Regarding the skills, the underlying skills are the same as in-person, but you have to adapt how you demonstrate them. For example, you may be good at connecting in a room, but you have to learn how to make that same connection through a screen. This means upping your questioning skills and leading with vulnerability. You’ll also need to schedule time specifically for connection.

Communication is key. Make sure that your supervisors know the work that you have done, and most importantly, the value you added. Consider sending weekly emails, highlighting your work and results for the week, with emphasis on numbers, value, increased clients, sales, profits, etc. Pay attention to where you increased operations, systems, productivity, profits, business, and reduced costs, time, waste. Pay attention to the needs of your boss and look for ways to make their workload easier. Keep track of your accomplishments and have them ready for your employee reviews, when citing why you should get a promotion

Stay visible by regularly interacting with the stakeholders who can influence your movement within the organization and by volunteering for the right projects that can make a positive impact. Don't rely on keeping your head down and just getting your work done. That's the minimum and won't propel you to the next level.

I agree with @christopher lind’s perspective herein. In addition to owning your efforts, one needs to raise up and make explicit the contributions and content that emerge from your direct efforts. Being active in group discussions, joining and volunteering for special projects, contributing on social media, ensuring the right work, ie, aligned to objectives and KPIs is what is being delivered, is essential.

Just because you are remote, doesn't mean you can't make time to meet your key stakeholders in person - if you are in the same area (even if it is an hour or so drive). I see people who are locally based as their managers, but never make time to meet them in person. Big mistake. And even more than that, networking with other leaders in the organization. Not every manager is going to be a mentor or sponsor for you. Sometimes you have to get noticed by people parallel & above them. If you are virtual, then making time to do informal catch-ups with your strategic stakeholders are essential - strategic meaning those who need to know what you do and your value in a role/company.
