How can you get noticed by your boss as a Product Manager?

1. Pay attention to the business. Do your own deep dive into the high level metrics, analytics and business model. Gaze deep into the abyss and let it gaze into you. Every business has blind spots that anyone can spot on day 1. The trick is understanding WHY the blindspot exists. If you can find a blind spot that has no reason to exist, you'll be a rockstar.

One critical part is to help you boss with new perspectives, ideas and challenges. Your boss is unlikely to value you unless you can bring new thinking to the table. This doesn't imply that your goals should be divergent. It simply means that you propose new goals and challenge existing ones if you see the need. Debate and discuss with your manager, and eventually align on a set of goals that you jointly arrive at. You boss owns the final decision, which you need to accept. One of Amazon's leadership principle is addresses this - "Have Backbone. Disagree and Commit."

Our real KRAs are our boss’ KRAs. Solving your boss’ problems, focusing on what is his KRAs (what he is being evaluated on, what matters for him) supporting him on topics which make him look good up the chain. Importantly, this does not mean being ingenuine, shallow or a sycophant. Sometimes helping your boss means positively challenging him.

In my view, standing out as a Product Manager involves being proactive in addressing challenges, communicating ideas clearly, and actively collaborating across teams. Consistently delivering results ahead of schedule, presenting data-driven insights, and showcasing problem-solving skills are crucial. Keeping your boss informed on project progress, emphasizing achievements, and seeking feedback demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement. These actions, from my perspective, not only capture your boss's attention but also position you for recognition and advancement in your role as a Product Manager.

If you prioritize your work for maximum effectiveness for the company, then by default it will be noticeable. Are you spending time doing continuous discovery which tunes your product sense? Are you helping the sales or support teams understand your product better so that the sales and onboarding is faster and easier? As you complete your 1:1's with your manager, share these activities and the desired outcomes from them. Because although they may see the calendar event of a sales training, if you shared the problem you discovered, and your plan to address, as well as the end result that will show a lot better ownership of your product outcomes.

Identify high value and high impact tasks and focus your energies on those. When you say you will do something - make sure you always come through. Leadership is a rare skill. If you show those traits - thinking ahead and thinking big, caring for the organization and caring for your team, going the extra mile, willing to do whatever it takes, ready to learn, ready to listen - then you will surely get noticed! Be the person who ‘gets stuff done’ ?

Your boss' view of you will be a direct reflection of how the management team views how well products are being managed. Your value to your boss is to ensure your products have quality, a good profit margin, are delivered on time and are available in sufficient quantity to satisfy demand. Do these things and the senior management team will think your boss is a genius and he will value you for that.

Getting noticed should never be your aim. If it is then maybe product management isn’t for you. Love your product, be passionate and understand the benefits of the product inside out. If you don’t love the product, then learn to. Passion is everything and don’t just agree with your boss to be a sycophant - if you have a good point then they should welcome it. Don’t focus on features and competitor analysis. Instead, understand the benefits by spending time with users. Features are transient but benefits are long term. Above all, my advice is don’t seek recognition from above. Instead, look within and set your own values.

Based on my experience, it's vital to showcase the tangible outcomes and benefits of your work as a product manager. Measuring and presenting the real-world impact of your decisions, backed by data and evidence, is key. Highlighting how your product benefits customers, the business, and stakeholders demonstrates your value and problem-solving abilities, establishing your credibility and worth.

The most important of all - Always seek feedback on your work - Take the feedback positively and try to act on it - Record how you’ve made progress and discuss in the next feedback meeting

Seeking feedback is important, but what's even more impactful is seeking it early. Don't be afraid to show your early drafts so your manager sees your thought process as well as ensuring that the final product is more in line with expectation.

Initiate regular check-ins for feedback. Embrace constructive criticism as a growth opportunity. Seek clarification on areas needing improvement and provide your self-assessment. Collaboratively discuss potential solutions, showing initiative and valuing your boss's guidance. Follow up by actively implementing feedback, demonstrating commitment, and providing progress updates. This approach highlights both your openness to improvement and reliability as an employee.

Seeking feedback is the only way to guarantee that what you are putting together satisfies everybody needs, including my boss, stakeholders, customers, peers and final users. Having meeting like sprint review sessions where we show progress to other people outside of the team is one of the most efficient ways to get constructive feedback and make progress towards it.

Additionally, enhancing your skills and knowledge through courses, books, events, or community engagement showcases your ambition and professionalism, further highlighting your value to the organization.

Having strong opinions in product management is essential—it shows confidence and depth of understanding. However, balancing this with a willingness to evolve is key. Communicate your ideas and strategies firmly, backed by data and research, but also be open to feedback and alternate viewpoints. For instance, in team meetings, present your product vision with conviction but engage actively in discussions that challenge your perspectives. This balance shows that while you are confident in your approach, you value collaborative input and are adaptable, a combination that can greatly impress a boss looking for dynamic and thoughtful leadership in product management.

I call this, the out of the JD candidate. But firstly, you need to know your boundaries and how far you can go in terms of owning something. You can do this easily by getting in touch with someone who has already been there, ideally your senior product manager or your fellow PM. Once that's clear, analyse how the various teams involved in your product make their contributions and why. The next step is to weigh in your thoughts and show them proof of how it will work if they're being implemented. Now that you've become the out of the JD candidate, you'll be the apple of your boss's eye!

Identify and address unmet needs or inefficiencies within the product or operational processes without waiting for direction. Get input from customers and internal stakeholders if possible. Present well-researched proposals to your boss, outlining the potential impact and a clear implementation plan, showcasing your ability to lead and innovate. Adding a quick ROI analysis never hurts.

Identify gaps in the end-to-end delivery of a project to achieve a business outcome. You can take ownership or support other teams to help fill those gaps. Then, share your work with your team and manager. It's hard work, but it will get you noticed by your manager and cross-functional team members. P.S.: I disagree that getting noticed should never be your aim. Sometimes, you need that bonus or promotion, and getting noticed by your boss makes it a lot easier.

Taking initiative and ownership is key in any role, especially as a product manager. Own your responsibilities, embracing both successes and setbacks. Be a proactive problem solver—propose solutions to challenges. Initiate communication regularly, seeking feedback and actively participating in discussions. Go beyond your job description, suggesting improvements and volunteering for projects. Approach your role with accountability and a drive to make a positive impact.

A team member talking positive about you to your boss builds that confidence level and boosts your performance. Only way for this to happen is active collaboration with team members.

The significance of collaboration and supporting others in making you to be easily noticed by your boss is numerous. You don't have to always want to do the whole task, embrace team work and collaborate with others by sharing your ideas or insight about a given task or project. Help in simplifying or interpreting complex task and he ready to help others in difficult situation. Don't just want to take the glory for the whole project, kindly carry others along even if you can do all. As you are impacting, you are learning and contributing to a good working atmosphere where eveyone can grow. This is definitely the best way to be noticed by your boss.

A core element of an effective product manager is collaboration- not just with stakeholders, engineering, etc. but with other product managers. The key here is to find opportunities to support and collaborate with other product managers to benefit them and their projects, not just your own. If you see a colleague struggling in an area you can help with or would benefit from knowledge or expertise you can share, reach out an offer support. It is a genuine way to build a strong reputation with the broader team and leadership.

Very important! When working with a team, always take your team with you, providing them with moral support. This can clear any hurdles on your roadmap towards your goals. With a team, you can establish a strong grip on the project while leading toward the goal. Teamwork is dreamwork when everyone is on the right & same strategy.

I believe it's just about being yourself and being a valuable person in the team. No one loves a liability. You should also be someone so big on communication and a person who loves the product. I don't think the goal is to get noticed by your boss as a Product Manager. The goal is to deliver products/features that delight customers & drive business value. If you focus here, a side benefit will be getting noticed by your boss. Here are a few other pro tips: When in doubt, have a bias for action - PMs that make decisions and take action are focused on the customer and get recognized. Be an owner - this was BIG when I worked at Amazon. You have to think & act like you own the product/company. Take it personal. Communicate your vision - imagining a world where "x" could happen is exciting! A compelling vision finds resources and support from your boss, team and co-workers.

Show up and put your best self forward. Always ask for feedback as you grow in your role and see where you experience can be leveraged to other business areas. Everyone have unique experience and can bring alignment from their tool box to support each other.
