My advice is always, to have a well-written plan of where you want to be in 5-10 years and then break it down to yearly goals. Work on one goal after another. It has always worked for me. Every twice a year review your progress with your supervisor and ask for feedback and guidance

The most effective way to get noticed by senior management in drilling engineering is to pitch what turns out to be the companies most expensive dry hole ever. This method is so effective it may also get you directly onto the radar of the CEO and HR.

- Be reliable, someone who can be counted on. - Do what you say you're going to do when you said you would do it. - Be willing to do what has to be done. It may be something others don't want to do. - Always look for ways to do things with greater efficiency without compromising safety. - Be an innovator. Look outside your business and industry for new ideas and techniques. Example - manufacturing practices applied to drilling and completion operations.

Any drilling engineer placing the correct data of NPT (Non-Performing Time of the Rig) before the top Management will be certainly noticed. If the top Management is in league with the Drilling Contractors, executive will be ear marked for exit. If the Management is honest then they will appreciate the executive and empower him to reduce the NPT.

In my experience I have noticed two aspects being noticed leadership for a drilling professional. First is to define and set benchmarks followed by beating and exceeding benchmarks by setting excellence. Second aspect which is very important and that is you must know what you are doing and you have best understanding to explain when it is required. Do work which is presentable. If you know how to present the work which you have delivered you will definitely be noticed.

Have a blowout. You will be noticed and when the facts show you screwed up, you will be promoted. Sounds ridiculous but I have witnessed this more than a couple of times in my 42 year career.

In my experience, drilling wells ahead of schedule is always a good start. Saving days on wells makes both drilling managers and investors happy.

I the field of corrosion, I have found that folks are rewarded when failures happen Downhole. No one is blamed for a corrosion related Workover, AFE is prepared to fix the completion and both completion engineering and operations get lot’s of money to fix things.

Always ask for more work and the hard projects. Be sure to execute. Stay outside your comfort zone. This will ensure you are constantly learning new things and staying in the category of the FIXER.

Aunque sabemos que aplicar metodologías ágiles en su totalidad a proyectos tradicionales es una labor difícil, por no decir imposible debido a su propia naturaleza, utilizar herramientas como el feedback continuo y revisiones periódicas con “nuestro cliente” (en este caso podemos asumir como la alta gerencia), situándolos en el centro y viendo como dará sus frutos desde muy corto plazo.
