Test Driven Development is a way to sharpen your focus, tighten the feedback loop and enable you to make changes to the system in a safe and predictable way. It does this by telling you to write tests before you write the code that makes the tests pass. This makes sure you take smaller increments, and always have solid foundation to continue working from. Some find TDD hard and not worth the effort. But getting past the first challenges and learning to do it is really rewarding. Some times I skip writing tests first, but I usually regret it. ??

To optimize the errors and bugs TDD is boon in agile methodologies, that helps to achieve the efficiency before writing the actual code. Resulting in identifying defects or bugs at an early stage of development and reducing the cost and effort required to fix them. in my experience to get the estimation time, this process helped me with a better understanding of the requirements gained through writing tests and developers can provide more realistic estimates for implementing features.

If you aren't doing automated testing/ TDD from the start of your project you will either have a massive backlog to catch up on for writing test, or you will never start it. Unfortunately too few teams ensure they allocate for TDD in their capacity for engineers to write their own tests, or for there to be a Test writer on the team. It's crucial. 80-85% code coverage with automated tests is hard but not unachievable and should be a decent target.

Canon TDD (from Kent Beck's material) is defined as: 1. Write a list of the test scenarios you want to cover 2. Turn exactly one item on the list into an actual, concrete, runnable test 3. Change the code to make the test (& all previous tests) pass (adding items to the list as you discover them) 4. Optionally refactor to improve the implementation design 5. Start simple if you're not experienced. Locate a important part of your application that doesn't require a lot of infrastructure: A calculation or core decision. Practice writing a bunch of test cases for that. Do you need to calculate an interest rate? Or a price for a shipment? Write simple input/output tests for that part of your domain and see how it helps you validate important logic.

Writing tests should be easy, fast and maintainable. Some of my best tips to enable this: - Set up and maintain data structures (not DB) for tests in a central place for re-use. Look into the Object Mother pattern for inspiration. - Utilize test doubles in a way that makes tests robust when changes occur. Tests should fail because the outcomes change, not because the order of operations does. Test fakes are much more resilient than mocks. - Set up your testing through manipulating the system state. Think approving application through services vs creating an approved application in the DB. This makes tests more robust against changes, and evolves your domain to make it easier to write the next test.

Don't get bogged down on definitions over what "unit" or "scenario" are. Your size depends on what you wrote down as being one atomic piece of behavior in your requirements gathering phase / testing plan. What's important is that from the context of the developer, the tests can run in any order and in-process very quickly. When they fail, they should fail for the right reason and tell you what it is.

Define super clear acceptance criteria: Work with the BA/PM along with the entire scrum team to define clear acceptance criteria. More granular, more better for the developers to write tests to cover various scenarios. Enforce coverage during code review/CI/CD: Have necessary tools in place to check if the Code coverage meets the standard agreed by the team and at the same time, the person who is reviewing the PR should validate the quality of the tests written. Necessary tools for following TDD: A lot of people who like to write TDD like to use tools that help in refactoring and generate code. Use jetbrains, and GitHub co-pilot etc to make engineers life simple.

(a) Measure Test Coverage & Code Quality- Monitor and track test coverage to identify areas with insufficient testing. Use code quality metrics like cyclomatic complexity and code coverage to assess code quality. Focus on improving both test coverage and code quality for better overall maintainability. (b) Refactor Tests Regularly - Just like code, regularly refactor tests to maintain their clarity and efficiency. Remove obsolete tests, redundant code, and unnecessary complexity. (c) Automate Repetitive Tasks- Use automation tools to automate repetitive tasks like test execution and reporting. Free up developers' time for more complex tasks and strategic thinking.
