When it comes to promotion, it is a two way conversation that starts with you It starts with you; - Preparing on the performance, Results and goals you have attained - Preparing a brief on everything about you and the impact you have created - Preparing how you have been upskilling for the promotion Then the last part; Ask! Not demand! It is a two way communication If they say no, inquire why and inquire how that makes you a more credible talent instead of just a demanding one

I can't stress this enough, it is not just about you! That's the first awareness you must have whilst having the promotion thought in mind Hence ask for a good timing, schedule it in never take your boss by surprise. But here's a tip, take your boss out of his office, this helps even out the unconscious power they have with their office in place

Start off by asking with the intention of promotion! And then only get feedback on the areas of improvement. This set the context of the conversation to align with the career pathway you intended! And whenever told listen empathetically and ask them how would it look like if you have achieved it Agree on a metric I can't stress this enough, because it is also your clarity to have as much as whatever they can provide! Never sacrifice your own mental sanity for someone elses un-clear metrics and pathway for you

When it comes to promotions it is normally easier said then done, what you could do is to make your case Then have that clarity yourself with your own boundary, never once flatter to the carrot and stick and also never once fall into entitlement The promotion is not yours, you don't quote unquote "deserve it" But it is there, and it is for you to put effort to earn it!
