How can you gain project leadership experience without a formal role?

Project Leadership is all about planning and execution with ownership mindset. Collaborate with respective stakeholders and prioritise tasks based on CPM. Adapt and solve the problems at right time with right resources. In short, it's all about one's common sense and behaviour with TEAM and work as ONE TEAM.

Taking the initiative to lead projects in volunteer settings offers invaluable experience. It's practical, challenging, and allows you to gain diverse leadership skills. There's no better way than on the job training.

I always believe in a philosophy of "find a need and fill it" mindset. When there is a clear gap in vision and decision making, it causes a vacuum that consumes the "air in the room" of potential solutions. Stepping up to provide ideas with a pathway to verification and validation gives stakeholders confidence that you are not just a team member, but you are thinking like a total solution provider. Offering your help to affect the bottom line shows your value to the organization beyond your present title. Its these skills that help an organization separate itself from the competition.

Getting out of your comfort zone should always be something that you strive to do - the more uncomfortable you are, the more you grow. With that being said, volunteering to take on some additional responsibilities are good, but talking through how these volunteer responsibilities lend themselves to both your personal and professional growth with a mentor will serve a better purpose. In doing so, you are able to make meaningful contributions all while gaining pertinent experience in the project management space. The best way forward would be to build relationships with stakeholders and mentors to understand which direction will better suit the project as a whole and use their feedback to focus your efforts (win-win for everyone)

Experience gained through volunteering is valuable in its own right. When volunteering, individuals can focus on tasks they enjoy, which fosters motivation and also drives skill development in crucial areas like leadership, communication, and problem-solving. Volunteering is a great way to broaden one's professional network, thus, opening doors to future job opportunities.

Don't be a wallflower at the project table. Seek out additional responsibilities that stretch your comfort zone. Manage resources, delegate tasks, or even propose innovative solutions. Remember, stepping outside your comfort zone builds confidence and showcases your leadership potential.

The only way out to learn is get out of your 'normal routine '.A good boss is just an excecuter, bit a good leader is the one who focuses on self betterment and thinks betterment for the team. No books can teach leadership ,unless you are willing to take up additional responsibilities.

A leader is the one who leads, not the one who has a title. Whatever role you are in within your project team, you will always be able to demonstrate your leadership skills. Leading means being involved at all levels of the project, being the driver of the people working around you and giving pause and speed up when necessary. Be proactive, empathetic with your colleagues and collaborators and go beyond your responsibilities, always respecting the hierarchy. The position will come.

Seeking out — and embracing — extra responsibility at work is an investment in your growth. Stepping up not only showcases your abilities but also opens doors to new opportunities and professional development…plus, it’s interesting! Making and fostering relationships with cross-departmental colleagues and learning about other areas of the business almost always guarantees that you’ll bring back new perspective to your day job and your immediate teammates. Everyone benefits!

While taking on extra responsibilities can be good to gain experience, there are two crucial aspects that you should consider. Firstly, determine how and to what extent additional activities are beyond the scope of your work. This is important in order to avoid being overwhelmed at work, and more to the point, to evaluate how extra responsibilities will actually contribute to meaningful project leadership experience. Secondly, ensure that you are credited by your organization and/or key stakeholders for all extra work that you do. Showing that you can handle more complex work is only useful if you are being acknowledged for your expertise, effort, and skill.

If you're keen to boost your project management expertise, prioritize it when completing your work specific performance goals for the next year. Look for opportunities within your company that align with these goals, such as pursuing Prince2 or PMP certification, which your company may already provide. By taking these steps, you highlight the significance of these objectives for your development while also securing your management’s support to pursue these opportunities.

From my experience I can say, every new PM-training is different, doesn’t matter when you learn how to execute a project, the aspect of soft skills. Every trainer has different skills, experience or how they would solve a problem etc. all these different aspects are necessary, because every project is different or has it‘s own challenges. Nevertheless, best practices, knowledge exchange and trainings are necessary!

Don't underestimate the power of knowledge. Invest in training and certification programs in project management. Online courses, workshops, and even professional certifications equip you with the tools and techniques to navigate complex projects with confidence. Remember, knowledge is your anchor in the stormiest seas.

Get a certifications like PMP can bring many interesting professional oportunities, automotive industry requires people with experience and strong qualifications.

I prefer on-the-job training to courses, because as the saying goes: "All theory is gray" and "Enough said, let deeds speak".

Handshake always brings new dimensions to any field. If you are willing to do this, you will not have to worry about whether you should join as a leader or just a team member. Joining a community of practice in your profession or concept is an excellent way to collaborate, learn, and share ideas. Find appropriate online forums, industry groups or local meetups where experts can discuss best practices, difficulties and innovations. Actively participate in discussions, share your experiences and take advantage of the combined knowledge of the community to improve your abilities and stay up to date in your field.

Join a credible community that has experienced and knowledgeable members. If you're going in blind then you don't want to be following other blind people, if you know what I mean.

CoPs are a great way to demonstrate your willingness to get involved in new areas, build new skills, and network, either within your organization or externally. Try to set out what you want to gain from your involvement in advance as it can shape which CoPs you might join. It is to grow your skills, impress and get closer to some specific people in your organization, networking, career progression, diversification, or a combination of these.

Continuous improvement (CI) is not limited to business processes. CI is small incremental changes that add up to significant results based on deliberate observation of the current status. Use the framework and tools of CI for your personality development and transfer the learnings to future projects. The right soft and hard skills for project management 10 years ago, are no longer the same in today’s work environment. CI on all levels will help you to be a modern leader within projects.

I have the frustrating tendency to regret a lot of inconsequential decisions I made related to my career and positions, but that is due to looking back and seeing past my blind spots. There are a lot of “I should have done this, said that, been more confident.” It is a very human reaction, but we must move forward and apply our lessons learned moving forward, however small. It’s easy to lose ourselves in roles and positions, but when working with people, we must remember that everyone is just that, people. No one wants to work overtime, be away from their family, and put out last minute fires any more than you do. I’ve found that keeping that in mind to simplify life for my clients and colleagues goes a long way to finding peace myself.

Die Rolle des PL ist eine sehr komplexe und natürlich gibt es stetig Weiterentwicklungspotentiale. Reflektiert und kritisch mit sich selbst zu sein, ist dabei wichtig. Leider nimmt man sich viel zu selten die Zeit dafür! Ich pers?nlich finde es auch nicht leicht das allein und im Stillen für sich zu machen. Auch hier finde ich es wichtig das Team, Kollegen oder Freunde einzubeziehen.

Plan out and own your journey. Where you are now and where you want to get to and the steps that will help to build towards it. Be tenacious, curious, and enthusiastic. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone with confidence. Once you realise that everyone has imposter syndrome and you're not the only one your mindset and approach will change for the better!

Start honing your project management skills where you are. You really don’t need to wait or look for formal PM opportunities. If you are in a job that requires you to execute on tasks, you can begin to develop and demonstrate PM skills. All of the fundamentals of project management are present in effectively doing your job. Learn what the primary areas of project management are, start to put rigor around what you do, and let your manager see the structured way you approach your work in the areas of communication, scoping, planning, scheduling, etc. As you do this and build a portfolio of successes—where you are—your developing abilities will be recognized and more opportunities to apply your budding PM skills will come your way.

In jedem Meeting lauern unentdeckte, ungehobene Sch?tze und manchmal auch offenkundige ToDo’s, deren sich niemand annimmt. Sei wachsam und entdecke sie. Sei aktiv und informiere den Teilnehmerkreis dass du dich darum kümmerst. Eine proaktive, unterstützende Projektmitarbeit wird sich früher oder sp?ter auszahlen und ganz sicher nicht unentdeckt bleiben!

Ask questions and gain insight to how others perceive their role in the projects. Put yourself in their shoes. Talk to the shareholders of the project gain their direct insight instead of hearing second hand. The more you can see of the bigger picture the better the outcome.
