I use often downloaded maps. These maps are usually in UTM or in MGRS format. I recommend to use a UTM to GPS converter or to bear in mind that a UTM position is written like 33N 3766 2229 (meaning 12°N 34°E).

One of the best experience I had with GPS off-line was when I used MotionX range bearing interface to create the shortest route for a coastal rowing regatta. This helped my crew to gain nearly 30 seconds during the race. Which is a lot!
