The best way to attract a great mentor is to be a great mentee. Here's what that means: 1. Know exactly what you are trying to accomplish. 2. Have concrete steps that you are taking toward that goal. 3. Consume the content your mentor has created on the subject and pay attention. 4. Reach out to the mentor with specific, nuanced questions that are the result of taking action. It's not the mentor's job to tell you what you want in life. It's not the mentor's job to push you to work toward you goals. It's not the mentor's job to answer basic questions that you're too lazy to Google. If you simply put a little work in and ask questions connected to the real challenges that arise from doing the work, most mentors will LOVE helping you.

I have found mentors through my network on LinkedIn that have manifested to really fruitful, ongoing relationships. For me, it's come from being active on LinkedIn daily, commenting on posts that inspire me, and being willing to introduce myself to the leaders/creators I admire. The main advice I would give is to remember: these people are busy with work, life, hardships, vacations, kids, etc. Make sure that when you reach out you express interest in getting to know each other without putting another to-do on their list. Asking for a digital coffee date might be too much for them to sign up for, but letting them know you are inspired by their posts or interacting with their content regularly is a great way to start building a relationship

We work hard at the things we love to do, but occasionally it can feel as if no one but the cat is impressed. The answer to the isolation of solitary effort is to talk with those who've been through the same mapless territory; to ask about ways to regain the belief in inevitable greatness. I'm always glad to help others with their writing, and I find that it deepens my view of the creative process. I was a skilled writer at ten years of age, but I've never given up the struggle to be better. My methods for starting, continuing and finishing a piece take years off that journey.

Mentor-craze has created this weird culture where 19-year-olds pop into the inboxes of CEOs, asking (with absolutely no preparation) if they'll mentor them. Which is a lot like asking someone to marry you on the first date. A better solution: Read 3 books in an area you want to excel in. Finding a mentor as a copywriter shouldn't be particularly hard. There are plenty of senior copywriters out there ready to play Yoda to your Luke Skywalker. The trick is finding the right mentor. With the right expertise. In the right industry or copywriting niche. Understanding these industries and niches, and your own intended career path, is vital to finding the right mentor. In other words, you have to know where you're going (and where you want to go).

Not every mentor needs to know they are your mentors! Search for people who are further ahead on the career you'd like to build yourself and start observing what they do.
