I have three portrait lenses for my Nikon DSLR, the 58, the 85 and the 135 DC with soft focus. They are all prime lenses and I don't do portraits with a zoom. The 58 is very handy in low light as I never shoot on a tripod, so I have a better chance of getting a sharp portrait at an event with the 58. I have found that a person with a round face shoots better with the 58. I have a large collection of lenses, that happens to photographers and some are collectors' items. Most of them are portrait lenses. My workhorse is the NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 85mm / 1.4G, I usually shoot it at f5.6 and it is already very sharp. Like anything mass-produced it's subject to variations in quality and it's actually my second lens, if you buy a lens take some time to test it and return it if you think you can get a better one. Nikon is solid, I recently dropped my 58mm and after sending it to Nikon they said it was not damaged! I am loyal to my tools and my technique because it gives me perfect control, a lens could be better on paper but this is the lens I have used to shoot thousands of people and it has never failed me.
