Absolutely comfort matters! Especially if you're going to be wearing them for 34508934280923480 hours a day. I always go with over the ear sized headphones for this. They also have the added benefit of sealing sound in (with closed back headphones) so tracking doesn't run as big a risk of headphone blead into the mics. I never noticed the heaviness of AT M50X's or Yamaha HPH-MT8's being an issue, in fact the weight helps them feel solid and isolating in a good way, especially in loud environments. One of the punk drummers even had a set of custom phones that were made from those airport earmuff things, looked kinda hilarious, but hella punk rock! And man they were a dream to use when tracking drums!

Especially if you're using them in taxing environments!!! There are great headphones but I work in a studio that makes punk/rock, and also use headphones regularly at live sound gigs, so they've gotta be robust and able to handle loud levels. Personally I like AT-M50X's and Yamaha HPH-MT8's for this exact reason. They sound pretty friggin good, but can also take a beating! A lot of more expensive models are a bit too delicate to really take into the trenches with a punk rock drummer's tracking session, or for use at an EDM show.

There are limitations inherent in headphones as a tool in general (just like there are limitations in the tool of monitors). I've found personally that the answer isn't "what kind of tool is perfect for all situations" but rather, "what collection of tools fits my production style." Personally I prefer closed back headphones for tracking and editing, then monitors for the majority of mixing and mastering, then checking mixes/masters on everything from closed back headphones to monitors to earbuds to cars and everything else I can. Remembering this helped me to feel less nervous about buying a new set of headphones, because I can still get my money's worth even if they don't work exactly as I expected them to :-)
