My go-to lens is a 24mm to 120mm, and I usually shoot at 85mm or higher. Please keep in mind that portraits are very personal, and while some photographers prefer to shoot with a telephoto lens to maintain distance from their subjects, I prefer to get a bit closer and establish a connection. This lens is versatile and ideal for weddings and events.

For portraits it's best to avoid wide-angle lenses and stay at least 1.5 or 2 metres from your subject's face to avoid perspective distortion. For this reason I generally use a 24-105 @ around 105mm and sometimes a 70-200 if I'm not likely to need any full length shots in the set. At the end of the day though it's not the lens that makes the picture - it's your eye and your connection with the subject.

Aperture is one main subject while discussing portrait photography. Well it depends upon the photographers need for how much background blur is needed, as it differentiates the person from the background. The lower the number like f/0.8 or f/1.8 the higher the lens opening, the higher the background blur and the higher the number like f/3.5 or f/5.6 the lesser the lens opening hence receiving less light, so less background blur. Meanwhile portrait lenses have less number in order to give a wide lens opening to capture the perfect bokeh. Some prime lenses offer variable focal length while some have fixed focal length. Lastly it depends upon the sole need of the photographer as in which conditions he is going to capture the Images.

En fotografía de retrato a parte de la focal la apertura lo mas importante es saber jugar con las luces y las sombras, para darle el carácter que necesita la foto según el objetivo del retrato, tanto en estudio como en exteriores el uso y aprovechamiento de la luz es vital, luego ya van el resto de elementos pero en mi opinión lo primordial es un buen uso de la luz lo demás es secundario....(la fotografía es Luz....), luego una buena Lente con distancias focales y capacidad de aperturas grandes hace que los retratos adquieran ese look tan demandado con un bokeh bonito

I use short telephoto lenses for portraits. 85mm & 105mm with large apertures. Blurs out the backgrounds if you need and compresses some of the facial features that is more pleasing.

While most people think about portraits as head-and-shoulders or maybe a bit farther, there's also environmental portraits. This is a portrait that may be taken with a 50mm or wider lens and include a scene that says something about the person. For example, a restaurant owner standing in the middle of his/her restaurant taken with a 35mm lens tells you something about the portrait sitter. So, not all portraits are taken with a short telephoto lens.
