How can you expand your professional network through informational interviews?

I can't entirely agree here. I often meet up with people with absolutely no real agenda other than getting to know people and their skills. Many times I get told that I am wasting my time and they don't see any point in meeting up or getting to know that can bring any value to you in this instant. However, life has many times taught me differently. See, when you are talking to people before you need them, the conversation looks different. You are, and also come across as more genuine which many times also results in them opening up more than they would in a normal interview setting. The worst thing that can happen is that you get to know a person very different from yourself and your current world, and that can be a future win.

Based on my professional experience, informal interviews can take the form of one-on-one interactions or occur on an open platform within your professional network. Prior to initiating any informal interview, it is imperative to establish an environment where the other party perceives value in their participation. If you successfully cultivate such an environment, individuals will be inclined to actively engage, fostering genuine feedback and a positive collaborative atmosphere.

When you’re reaching out to someone about their career PLEASE make sure you actually know about their background and ask them specific questions about their journey. Ask for advice. I think people (in most of the cases) like to help. I learned that one powerful method is to ask for advice instead of asking for feedback. In this way people can suggest you concrete ways to make progress. Of course you can pick what works for you.

Before interviewing someone, we should do small research about the Prospect about their career and professional background. And, don't forget to decide on the goals of the interview in advance.

When reaching out, I always try to see if there is a common denominator, that always helps. It doesn't matter if it's a friend of a friend or something but it changes the situation in your favour. Most people are too busy to just meet up "and talk" so a good way is to A) make them understand that you are interested in a skillset that they have, and B) you think that this skillset could be of high value for this person. And don't underestimate a free lunch, so don't be afraid to throw in, a "fine lunch on me". That normally motivates people to take some time to meet you up in a relaxed setting making it possible for you to assess if the person is what you need or not.

At the end of the day, you want the person on the other side to believe you and you to be fully convinced that this could be the greatest opportunity of his life is what you want to go for. However, that also takes preparation to sound and feel fully committed to your job, you need to say it and know it and that takes repetition, so practice "pitching" with friends and family and finally when you feel ready you can start reaching out to the people you actually want to attract.

Follow up & stay in touch, mostly people just simple write "Thank you" and than forget or wait for interviewer to give update, where as if are in touch with interviewers they not give update as well they also tell us about our Strengths and Weakness.
