How can you expand your network when transitioning to a career in strategy?

These are the 3 things that set me apart and I think they might help you. 1. Move from just network to inner circle: I talk to about 10 people per day about what I do and then move about 1 of them into my friendship zone. 2. The greatness is in those thought-leadership reports: I immerse myself in what others spend time researching and reporting. Mckinsey, Harvard etc. You want to see what others ignore. 3. Investing in Personal Branding: I also learned that its no longer about the substance alone but the packaging. I have 1 speaking engagement per month, writing about my work, taking quality pictures and videos of my work and most importantly, pushing my self out there through media engagement. I never miss a good story.

Set specific, measurable goals for your career transition to strategy. For instance, aim to connect with a certain number of professionals in your desired sector each month. Utilize platforms like LinkedIn to research individuals in roles you aspire to and companies you’re interested in. Consider joining strategy-focused groups or attending webinars and conferences to meet like-minded professionals. Setting clear objectives for acquiring industry knowledge, seeking mentorship, or securing informational interviews can guide your networking efforts. Regularly assess and refine your goals based on the responses and opportunities you encounter, ensuring they align with your evolving career path in strategy.

Be one with your goal through self awareness. Create specifics around the goal. This will be overwhelming especially if that goal seems complex and intricate. Be intentional about specifics, drawing up the specifics does not mean you cannot go overboard, it only means there is a red-thread you want to walk with. When you walk and see other possibilities, you can jump or adjust. However if you dont have specifics and become one with it, you will not start. Infact this ends up becoming a limiting factor for you.

Unlock career success with clear goals. ? Define your dream industry. ? Identify the skills you need. ? Seek support from mentors. By setting clear goals, you can focus your efforts and attract the right opportunities. Remember, it's all about you and your journey.

Before reaching out to people, we should reach t ourselves. We should know why we need new relations, new connections, new experiences and etc. We also should be honest and customize our targets, so we can filter some situations and go to the point.

we should remember, already we have some connections than could help us to manage our time and relations. First of all we should try to make old relations alive, and then we could expand our networking.

One thing I have found really helpful is to maximize lateral contacts and connections. Most people only look towards people above them to network with and eventually help with career transitioning. However I have found that there is alot of gold to mine and the level of your comparables, who have access to those senior contacts you are looking for. The path to transitioning is not a cast in stone one or a rigid, it is a process that may require a number of stops before getting to the final destination.

As you are doing your own reading and learning, you are going to come across information and resources that you don't personally need, but others in your network may find useful. Technology is really helpful here because it only takes a quick moment to text, email or personally message someone a link to an article or resource. The other thing that I've developed is a reference library where I include resources that I've personally collected related to my areas of expertise and I share those out when people in my network need access.

Don't feel limited to associating with your immediate peers. If you're in the Sales department you may want to familiarize yourself with the Accounting Department, Operations, and Warehousing. Your camaraderie with the people in different departments may enhance your status in your own department. It also allows you to communicate with the people who can control the movement of products, the accuracy of finances, and the expediting of your clients orders. Each of the aforementioned departments normally hear from Salespeople only when there's a problem. Try being the one who speaks to the people in these departments when you only have positive things to say. You'll find your network will grow in a very positive manner.

If necessary you can categorize the individuals in your network into work related groups and send emails designed specifically for each group. Of course, if you can send weekly emails that's even better in keeping you always fresh in the minds of your network(s). Design a letterhead-type email as your template for each group and use the same template consistently. That way your network(s) will immediately recognize your emails. Appropriate articles for each group can be found easily on the internet. It's an easy way to be remembered.
