How can you evaluate technology integration models in your school?

1 SAMR Model

The SAMR model, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, is a four-level framework that describes how technology can transform or enhance learning tasks. Substitution and Augmentation are enhancement levels, where technology acts as a direct tool substitute with no or some functional improvement. Modification and Redefinition are transformation levels, where technology allows for significant task redesign or the creation of new tasks that were previously inconceivable. To evaluate the technology integration models in your school using the SAMR model, consider how technology changes the learning task or outcome, supports higher-order thinking skills and creativity, and enables new forms of communication and collaboration.

3 TIM Matrix

The TIM matrix, developed by the Florida Center for Instructional Technology, is a five-by-five matrix that combines five levels of technology integration with five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. It ranges from Entry to Transformation, and Active to Goal-Directed. The TIM matrix provides a continuum of technology integration scenarios and indicators for each cell of the matrix. To evaluate the technology integration models in your school using the TIM matrix, you can ask yourself questions such as how does technology foster active and collaborative learning, or support constructive and authentic learning? Additionally, how does technology promote goal-directed and self-regulated learning?

4 Triple E Framework

The Triple E framework, created by Dr. Liz Kolb, is a three-part model that evaluates the extent to which technology engages, enhances, and extends learning. To assess the technology integration models in your school using this framework, consider questions such as: does the technology capture and maintain students' attention and curiosity? Does it support and improve students' mastery of the content and skills? Does it enable students to transfer and apply their learning to new situations and contexts? Engage refers to motivating and interesting students in the learning process; Enhance means supporting and improving students' learning outcomes and skills; while Extend allows students to apply their learning beyond the classroom and connect it to their lives and the world.
