i will also add that many a times there is tampering with the update however in order to overcome that many reputed developers/ OEMs give the has value of the update and you can download the update and do a hash of the update, compare the hash value and only install it if the two hashes match else discard it and report the matter.

Installation on operational machines should always be preceded by a pilot installation or may be a sandbox environment kind of testing to be very sure of the functioning and issues if any. In addition, you need to understand that there can be issues despite checking everything so always have a back up prepared of the operational data before doing any installation.

For more critical or complex applications, I have found it best to split the rollout into 3-4 groups (Test, First, Fast, Broad), with the first group having the smallest number of targeted users/devices so you can react quickly to undetected behaviour. There should be at least 2 days delay between groups. Of course, in the case of zero-day exploits, this method should be skipped in favour of a rapid update.
