How can you evaluate the effectiveness of workshop feedback?

Communicating the objectives of the training program to the trainees clearly, is essential even before administering the training program. Boost their confidence and morale by explaining why they were chosen for the program. Let them be informed that their performance will be evaluated after the completion of training, to benchmark the effectiveness of the program. Linking some rewards schemes like promotion, incentives, trip abroad, valuable gifts etc for the best performers will boost the interest, commitment & focus of the learners. Obtaining feedback & suggestions for improvement from both trainees as well their superiors / HODs is always the best way to gauge & alter the training programs accordingly for improved effectiveness.

In my experience it’s key to be clear and focus on what outcomes you want to achieve from the workshop. Then focus on what areas you want to gather feedback on. Getting feedback about the learners’ experience and commitment to being apply to apply learning in the flow of work is key.

There are many methods to check evaluation. One of the methods I recommend is ask participants to creat an Action Plan at the end so that the leaders can understand next steps. This Action Plan should include a timeline, actions, skills needs and expected behaviors.

One of the thing I like to do is have the participants and/or their managers identify a business metric the workshop will improve. At the end of the workshop, a few weeks later engage with the participant and/or manager to see if they notice an improvement. Linking training to business needs helps to drive the change culture.

In the era of "survey fatigue", one needs to be mindful when designing surveys. Keep it simple. It isn't just about how long or short the survey is, but it's more to do with how comprehensible the survey itself is. If a question feels "vague" or "unnecessary", remove it. Only keep those questions which could help you and your business identify immediately the tangible outcome. Your survey should also provide participants with an opportunity to suggest on what could have been better. Never shy away from direct feedback.

Designing questions for feedback will be depending on objectives of the training and evaluation. One thing to ensure that you must ask open ended as well as close ended questions to get proper information. Ask relevant questions, use easy language which is to be understood by all participants. You can compare the data before and after training for evaluation of training.

It’s always important to close that loop with your project sponsors as you embark on any projects. In doing so, you will slowly visualise the impact of the work and effort that you have placed in the preparation and the execution stages of the project. Hopefully, you would also feel a sense of achievement which motivates you to do even greater stuffs!
