How can you evaluate candidates with multiple job offers?

Being transparent with candidates will encourage them to be transparent right back. It's perfectly okay (and a great thing) to have multiple options and a recruiter can help you weigh the pros and cons of each. A good recruiter wants you to be happy - we don't want to place people in jobs where they won't feel fulfilled.

Firstly you need to know what is motivating the candidate to move and does your opportunity tick most (or all) of the boxes they are after. Finding out their priorities and what's most important to them, asking for the 5 things they need in their next move helps. Key things I find that are usually at the top of the candidate's list are; compensation package, company culture, opportunity for growth/progression and work-life balance.

I used to apply: 1. Open discussion: try to ask, share, and advise your understanding of the labor market, market trends, and career roadmap. Try to share about career goals, and what they contribute most in a job and your organization. 2. I always separate an offer into two parts. 1. Forget about money. Do you believe in the vision of the team, want to do the work and like the people? Is this the JOB you want? 2. If the answer is YES to #1 then what is the monetary offer you are hoping for? Only negotiate if you are ready to accept when the employer gives you what you ask for. With multiple offers I go through the same process and rank them.

Throughout the candidate's interview process, I always check in on other opportunities in play. After each interview with my client, I get a pulse check. "How does this compare to your current role? Other interviews?" I'm not interested in strong-arming candidates into accepting offers they are unsure about. I want to know as we go along what they are most interested in and why. A realistic deadline is 5 business days for an experienced hire and 2-3 business days for someone more junior in their career.

Closing the deal is all about timing and making the candidate feel valued. Once we've found the perfect match, setting a deadline is essential to create a sense of excitement. I believe in making candidates feel special, so I emphasize the exclusivity of our offer. Mainly through a friendly phone call and well-crafted offer letter. It's not just about closing the deal; it's about welcoming them warmly into the team, making them feel like they're not just employees, but really joining a team on a mission.

Setting a deadline and closing the deal is the final step in securing top sales talent. Creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity is essential. Offer clear terms and conditions through a formal letter or contract. Employ incentives like signing or performance bonuses to motivate the candidate to make a swift commitment. This approach ensures a successful recruitment process for your sales team.

Make sure that this deadline is made clear to the candidate ahead of the offer. Prep them beforehand about the timeline to make sure that they are aware.

Make sure to stay connected before hire with a call, text or visit to the office or lunch with the team if possible. Time flys on the hiring manager side but this is a huge life change for the candidate.

My one bad news comment of the day: Sometimes it's ok to tell the candidate that another role may be right for them. Build trust and be understanding that the goal is for each candidate to be in the right role, and that role may not be the one you have on the table for them. I've coached candidates through offer negotiations for other roles that aren't mine and what I gained from it was a long term network connection, some of whom I've actually done business with afterwards.
