How can you establish a strong foundation for a successful business relationship?

Business Relationship is no different from personal relationship. It needs to be genuine & sincere. One of the most important ingredients for a successful business relationship is communication. Often relationship fails when one party starts believing that he / she is doing a favor to the other. No relationship can be long & successful if any of the two parties feels that way.

Trust has to be the foundation, or nothing happens. After trust comes win-win. If the relationship is not mutually beneficial it will go nowhere. And there must be some type of ROI. That's it.

Create a culture of discipline, honesty, integrity, passion, and purpose in the team first. They will take the culture to your clients, vendors and other partners even when you are not involved. This would lead to the foundation of good business relationships today (when you are a small team) or later (when you shall be a large team).

Practically, be willing to be vulnerable, and at the same time knowing that we (or our business/value proposition) cannot be all things to all people is to me the best way to set up a long term business relationships. I have seen so many compromise values, time and resources to secure that "all important" relationships only to realise that its all for short term gains, mid to long terms damage. In other words, be upfront, and if there is no meetings of values (not minds) walk away as soon as possible. Let the other party walk away too, dun use your ego to try to "bend backwards" to woo them back!

It's fundamental to establish the "Purpose", it's also a must to revisit it, during conflicts! Purpose charts the path for partnership and will be the "holy book" for adherence. Purpose driven partnerships, driven with capable resources is bound to succeed!

By thoroughly assessing these elements, you can lay a solid foundation for your business, increasing the likelihood of long-term success.

Take feedbacks A lot can be done when it comes to business relationships, but the foundation should be positive with the perspective of mutual growth.

Charting the course of a business relationship requires gauging the winds of readiness. As per my understanding, Assessing readiness in a business relationship involves evaluating both parties' capabilities, communication styles, and commitment. Ensure alignment in goals, expectations, and resources. Regularly communicate and address any concerns promptly to gauge and enhance the readiness for a successful collaboration.

This involves evaluating multiple factors such as: 1. Cultural Understanding 2. Market Research 3. Legal and Regulatory Compliance 4. Local Partnerships 5. Technological Infrastructure 6. Adaptability 7. Economic Stability 8. Communication Channels Additionally, we also need to consider policies, political stability and vision of the parties that aligns with each other.

Monitoring the progress of the partnership at agreed frequencies, helps in course corrections and re-gauge the expected outcomes.

Building a business relationship is like piloting a ship - effective governance is your navigation system. Define Roles and Responsibilities: Clarify who does what, fostering accountability Set Communication Protocols: Establish how and when parties will communicate Decide on Decision-Making Processes: Agree on how decisions will be made and by whom Implement Performance Metrics: Develop criteria for measuring success and progress Outline Rules and Boundaries: Clearly state the do's and don'ts within the partnership Regularly Review and Adapt: Continuously evaluate and adjust governance structures as needed Establishing clear governance is not just about maintaining order; it’s about steering the relationship towards success.

Additionally, establish processes for identifying, assessing, and managing risks associated with the relationship. 2. Additionally, agree on a governance structure that outlines decision-making processes, communication channels, and mechanisms for resolving disputes. This may involve creating a governance board, defining reporting lines, and establishing regular review meetings.

The line of Communication should be made clear inorder for parties to provide timely feedback. A tracking system to measure daily performance should be adhered to.

Enable review the business progress on periodical basis with the business contributors with acceptance of business governance. More important to produce positive results expected for the business growth or development.

Integrity. Be honest and take the high road. Do what you say you will do. Be respectful and mindful of others. Act in the best interest of others

I would say building trust is key here. Take strike & consistency but so worth it in the long run Keep the small commitment as they become bigger

Building and gaining trust should be a neutral playing field for each party. In my case ‘trusted advisor’ to a stakeholder. Trust comes from confidence in backing yourself, not arrogantly but thoughtfully, tactfully and with a solution in mind. When you trust your own capability you feel comfortable putting your ideas to test, challenging when needed however equally importantly listening to your leaders with what works and why for their/our business model. Open lines of communication but same page will get you to have mutual respect and consistency.

Be valuable with no expectations in return. Do what you say you're going to do, when you say you're going to do it. I believe this goes a long way to building that trust which is so necessary.

People tend to do business with people they like and trust. So.. 1. Mean what you say, 2. Deliver on what you promise and 3. Be a problem SOLVER rather than a problem TELLER.

Building and nurturing professional relationships is an art that goes beyond mere networking. It’s about laying a foundation of trust and mutual respect, grounded in humility and authenticity. When we approach connections with our genuine selves, it allows for more meaningful and enduring relationships. This authentic approach fosters a collaborative environment where both parties can grow and succeed together.

One thing I've found helpful is to find authentic reasons to connect with your business development contacts. So many people send one or two emails without ever meaningfully connecting. If you have a system that allows you to regularly check in, for a meaningful reason, then you will be in better shape to nurture a good relationship.

Simply offer and deliver what the customer values and appreciates and when things go off the rails then give them an avenue to get it sorted via a person who has the ability to fix the problem!! IVR does not do that!!!!! But rather frustrates the customer to no end.

Nurturing business relationships is far more complex than some might think. Especially when we look at the long term mutual benefits for both parties. People will frequently forgive delays or mistakes. They happen and it's just a part of business. What they rarely forgive is neglect. It is far better to tell the partner of an error than to not mention it and hope it goes away. It's the not knowing. The lack of honest communication that is most annoying. When you have a solid working relationship, you create an environment of shared advice, guidance and endless referrals and testimonials. You can have a long term relationship that stretches way beyond just being another business partner.

Nurturing a business relationship is like tending a garden; it needs continual care to flourish. Seek New Opportunities: Always be on the lookout for areas of growth and innovation Encourage Experimentation: Foster a culture where trying new things is supported Continuously Improve: Regularly review and enhance processes and methods Align Goals and Strategies: Ensure that objectives and approaches are in sync Recognize and Reward Success: Acknowledge achievements and contributions Reaffirm Commitment: Regularly revisit and renew the commitment to the relationship Nurturing growth isn’t just about expansion; it’s about deepening roots to weather future storms together.

In a business relationship management context, I believe 'investing in the relationship' signifies the commitment of time, effort, and resources toward nurturing and strengthening the partnership between two entities.

Progress will come naturally and definitely should be monitored. A key account is a highly lucrative for the business and should be monitored very closely and never take things for granted. Never abuse the relationship and trust. The competition should be equally monitored and never let go of the level of service and finding creative and suitable solutions should always be our edge.

In this perspective, it is critical to establish a system for monitoring and evaluating the performance of the business relationship against agreed-upon metrics. This may involve regular performance reviews, audits, or other assessment activities.

Regularly evaluate the progress of the relationship against predefined goals. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and conduct periodic reviews to identify areas for improvement and celebrate successes.

Just be honest. The start of any meaningful relationship should be built on honesty. Without this as your foundation the relationship will eventually collapse.

Honesty (and authenticity) is the best policy! This allows for the creation of real bonds in the workplace where we spend a huge portion of our time.

1. Understand their business - What are their current goals and pain points? What projects do they have planned over the next 12 months? What’s happening within their industry right now? 2. Add Value - Find solutions that provide value, whether that helps drive progress towards their goals, or minimise friction from pain points. 3. Meeting cadence - Be respectful of their time. Arrive on time to meetings, be prepared with an agenda and summarise key takeaways. Communicate clearly and concisely. 4. Expectations - Communicate clear expectations from all parties involved. Agree on timelines including target deadlines, catch ups etc. Follow through on everything you say you will do, or don’t mention it at all.

Besides collaboration with local partners time to time, demonstrating respect for their values and maintaining integrity will contribute to a positive and enduring business relationship.

Only thing that matters in business relationship is a win-win based outcome It might not be 50:50 always, but there has to be something for each party to look forward to. It may not necessarily be money or profit only, but whatever it is should make the party commit to the relationship and the outcome
