In my experience any department in the Manufacturing industry on which essentially gives service to the next in line work center in a supply chain will be efficient if it is able to 'anticipate' the needs of that department well and respond fast. This applies to store too. Reduction of issue times, flexible work times, quick turnaround of material from entry to issue, stock accuracy all work for the upstream supply stations. Information is always the key. A good understanding of the product and supply chain preceding arrival at stores is a definite advantage in prioritizing actions.

A store manager should be trained with the Supply Chain workflows to understand the challenges and action accordingly. Also daily supervision of warehouse activities, Inventory management, Space management, floor productivity and efficiency would help to achieve their goal better.

From my experience, if the inventory/stores team is aware of the planning and procurement procedures, they can take an active call on allocation of stock as per project urgencies. This includes them knowing the materials in transit and other factors like delays or rejections. Keeping them in the loop of planning and supply chain helps understand the process better as well as manage the stock in-hand wisely.
