How can you ensure your refactoring efforts improve the user experience?

Ensure that refactoring efforts improve the user experience by continuously involving UX/UI designers and conducting usability testing. Collaborate with the design team to align refactoring goals with user-centric design principles. Regularly test the application with real users to gather feedback on usability and address any issues identified. Prioritize refactoring tasks that directly enhance user interactions, responsiveness, and overall satisfaction. By maintaining a user-focused approach throughout the refactoring process, teams can ensure improvements align with user experience goals.

The whole point of TDD is to make the User Experience of implementing software better for the perspective of an engineer. I don't want to fix unmaintainable code. I need tests which prove the behaviour of the current implementation. I need to easily ring-fence a specific part of the application to make my tests function appropriately. I don't want unit tests which tests an underlying implementation from a white-box perspective. I need tests that allow me refactor/reorganise / change responsibilities / move code into more meaningful places, without having to fix scores of unit tests along the way. If I have tests that act as a "black box" around a particular "unit" (not CLASS), software becomes as malleable as it is supposed to be.

Good user experiences are highly subjective, and it’s impossible to create good UX without a deep understanding of who the technology is for. Always prototype your tech and generate detailed user stories. If you don’t have access to your users themselves, do this with your team! After all, an important part of being good developers is being able to put yourselves in your users’ state of mind. Who is going to be using this? What do they want to be able to accomplish? Why? These are the bare minimum questions you have to ask yourself when you create a user experience.

The agile process is the best process to embrace changes as it is customer-oriented and can be more effective due to continuous interaction with customers (better in understanding the requirements), it can be implemented by restructuring our project development on the go, also we can learn by the challenges faced during the development.

Focus on UI/UX related performance improvements that work in the backend like minimal scrolling, lesser latency, minimal clicks, better usability etc. Keep getting the feedback from the end user & improvise.

You only know what you measure: whether a refactoring did improve user experience can be measured qualitatively (through usability tests), or in a quantitative way either objectively with analytical data (conversion, error rate and time on task), or subjectively with different post-use questionaries (eg. system usability scale, SUS). You need to measure both BEFORE and AFTER refactoring so that you can compare the two.
