How can you ensure your product is easy to use?

Start by observing people in environments where your product might be used. Notice their interactions, frustrations, and delights. This real-world observation grounds your personas in actual user behavior, rather than assumptions. For instance, watching how different age groups interact with a mobile app in a coffee shop can reveal insightful usage patterns.

In my experience, understanding users' needs, behaviors and motivations through well crafted personas can guide design decisions toward ease of use. I recommend to invest time in researching and developing detailed personas to ensure your product aligns with real user expectations and capabilities.

Understanding users' emotions is a crucial aspect when working on any product. Users experience various emotions, each with different goals. As designers, to create seamless user flows, it's essential to empathize with the user's diverse mindsets while using your product. Maintaining user excitement regardless of their emotional state is a challenging task, but it can be improved by defining clear user personas with specific goals.

Usability testing is a crucial method to assess how well a product performs in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction. Real or potential users engage with the product, providing valuable insights that reveal strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. This process validates assumptions and measures satisfaction through approaches like moderated or unmoderated, remote or in-person testing. However, relying solely on usability testing outputs is cautioned, as user decisions during testing may differ from real-life scenarios where choices are often made unconsciously.

Who are we designing for? What's their technological expertise? Which devices are they comfortable using? Which devices will they use for this product? What's their back end tech? How heavy is the data in the product? Are they colour blind or have any other disability?.....and so on... Understanding the end user is very important at the beginning of the product cycle so you can deliver intuitive design and useful products. Post the design, testing with the user group gives you deeper and clearer insights on its workability. Take the feedback, reiterate, deliver phase 2. Its a loop.

If there is a product that you are improving then simply get the usability feedback from a SUS test which is quick and simple and will give you direction on: 1. How bad or good the product is 2. How much more effort is needed to make it usable. If a completely new product then start from the ground up with: 1. Categories - Card sorting or grouping 2. Guerrilla testing wireframes on paper 3. Prototyping to get data to guide you and the stakeholders to make the correct design choices.

As a designer I feel usability testing is my essential companion in the world of user-centered design. It acts as the guiding force that validates the decisions I make in my designs, revealing pain points and fueling iterative enhancements rooted in real-world insights. Whether gauging user satisfaction or strategically selecting testing methods, I rely on a combination of qualitative and quantitative data to shape informed decisions. Keep in mind one thing - visitors should easily be able to accomplish their goal. And this shall also align with your business goal. For example, from a homepage - users should be able to find relevant products and categories. Improving product discovery. If they are able to accomplish this, it will eventually improve your conversion rate and revenue. This way, you can list down the other goals they have - like understanding features, product comparisons - and make sure we optimize these journeys.

A well done usability heuristics evaluation can help a lot to identify usability issues even before you start talking to users. It is a great way to avoid having “obvious” ux problems on the usability tests, and it gives more room to explore during user testing. It helps to make it part of the checklist before anything else. User Behaviour and Usage Analysis In my experience, there is a need to regularly analyse user behaviour statistics even after product is released in market. It is an ongoing process. Compare the results with the anticipated responce in initial design phase. The result often shows less engagement in specific region. That could be due to different needs. But in most of the cases that is where localisation of your product is required according to different cultural and habitual norms in that area. Localisation is not about language difference only. Sometimes, citizen of specific area simply unable to relate function of button to an icon used due to cultural difference. However, user privacy must not be breach during these analysis.

More users are joining the platform. The platform is inclusive for all the generations. Boomers quickly overcome the learning process to use it.

One major thing that I make sure is accessibility. Design with accessibility in mind. Ensure that your product is usable by people with disabilities. This includes considerations for colour contrast, keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility.
