How can you ensure your interview answers are relevant to the Information Security field?

An example I've seen is to bring real world examples of solutions and experience relevant to the industry you are applying for whether it be retail, industrial, government, or other. Become a good storyteller even if there isn't always a happy ending.

Basics of cyber security, networking protocols, web development and website structure, backend coding, firewalls,cryptography should be clear while interviewing for security opportunities. Basics always help’s in cyber security to learn and implement any tool.

For me, before your interview, ensure you grasp the fundamental concepts and terms of Information Security, such as confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, authorization, encryption, hashing, digital signatures, certificates, firewalls, VPNs, IDS, IPS, malware, phishing, ransomware, and more. Understand their meanings, functionalities, and significance in Information Security. Also, acquaint yourself with prevalent standards, frameworks, and best practices like ISO 27001, NIST SP 800-53, CIS Controls, OWASP Top 10, etc., which aid organizations in establishing and upholding effective Information Security policies, procedures, and controls.

Investigating an information security company before applying is crucial. Start by exploring their website for insights into their services and client base. Check news articles for their market presence and any notable projects or controversies. LinkedIn and glassdoor are valuable resources for understanding their corporate culture and employee feedback. Ensure they comply with industry standards and regulations. Lastly, consider reaching out to current or former employees for unfiltered perspectives. This research can be pivotal in making an informed career choice.

Maintaining honesty and humility in interview responses is essential. Avoid exaggerating, lying, or pretending to have knowledge or skills you don't possess. Admit uncertainty and explain how you would acquire necessary knowledge. Acknowledge mistakes and explain how you rectified them or learned from them. Avoid taking credit for others' work. Don't criticize past or current employers, colleagues, or clients. Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor to demonstrate trustworthiness and ethics in Information Security.

Twenty years of experience is not the same as twenty years of doing the same thing. The information security professional is built on the daily exposure to uncertainty and on the vigilant challenge of the environment and the dynamics of the adversary. Thus, experience is not how many times you have applied or implemented a standard or best practice, but how many times you have been out of the comfort zone adapting and challenging what is known to date and responding to the challenge imposed by the adversary all the time.
