What automated testing does is spend extra time now, to gain back time later. The larger the project and the longer the projected lifetime, the bigger the benefits. It's the trade off between a static/relative amount of extra work hours for each change, for a cumulative reduction in debugging and review efforts. Unless your project is never going to scale in time and/or complexity, it is always a no-brainer if done well.

I want to know why version control is not the first point, if it is mentioned at all. Even just a one man project if it's any bigger than an afternoon hackathon will seriously benefit from retaining a robust history and having well formulated merging strategies. For any project, after start of development, the first step should be, how to retain changes and the history of the changes.
