How can you ensure your employees are engaged at work?

Engagement of a co-worker, team member etc depends on the fundamental framework of "Trust". We need to give everyone the time and space to carry on their responsibilities in their own way and enable everyone with suitable coaches / mentors. Conversely, an employee will get easily disengaged if there is micromanagement in practice. Sometimes, just stopping the micromanagement can increase engagement levels.

There is a lot of insight into how it creates a positive, inclusive work environment. Based on my own experience, I can say; encourages open communication, allowing employees to voice ideas and concerns, fostering a sense of belonging and value. Offer regular feedback and recognition, acknowledging achievements and providing constructive guidance. Invest in professional development, providing opportunities for growth and learning. Promote work-life balance, respecting personal time and reducing burnout. Lastly, involve employees in decision-making, making them feel invested in the company's success. These strategies enhance engagement and contribute to a more motivated and productive workforce.

Yes communication plays pivotal role. Use right words in any of your meetings. In Today's modern world lot of communication channels are available, use the channel effectively for better communication.

Managers and Leaders need to embrace true empowerment which would mean democratisation in decision making of day-to-day work unit related functions. Current evolution in management experience is pointing to empowerment and democratisation as the sure shot remedy for improving employee engagement at work

Give employees autonomy in their work and trust them to make decisions. Empowerment can be achieved by providing them with the necessary resources, training, and support to take ownership of their tasks and projects.

Think about empowerment as a triangle of the three things you need to provide: Capabilities (training, skillset alignment with tasks); Resources (money, people) and Authority (let them make the decisions and don't second guess or change as it's not the decision you would have made)

A few approaches that work for me with building meaningful engagement with our employees and co workers are: -Awareness of how the team is interacting with each other outside of my planned and formal forums. Are the members functioning as a team or are they siloed? -Sharing goals as a team and talking about these goals often. -Self awareness as a leader. Am I engaging at the level I expect my team to engage? Especially in a world of remote work, meaningful interaction is critical. Setting expectations and taking the time to really connect with the team is so important. The small conversations we took for granted when we worked in office really were the building blocks of engagement. The conversations shouldn't stop, make the effort.

Implement a recognition and reward system to celebrate both individual and team achievements. This could range from verbal praise in meetings to formal awards or bonus structures. Recognition motivates employees and reinforces positive behaviors and outcomes.

Don't assume everyone wants to be recognized in the same way and don't substitute recognition for APPRECIATION! Similar but a lack of appreciation is why most people leave their jobs

Prioritize the physical and mental health of your employees. Offer wellness programs, flexible working arrangements, and ensure a healthy work-life balance. A supportive work environment contributes to employee satisfaction and engagement.

Include employees in decision-making processes, especially those that affect their work or the company culture. This involvement makes them feel valued and gives them a sense of ownership over the company’s direction and success.

Provide opportunities for professional growth and career development. This could be through training programs, mentorship, or challenging assignments. Employees who feel they are growing and developing are more likely to be engaged.

It all comes down to LEADERSHIP: Don't confuse management/supervision with being a good leader! you can gauge your employee engagement by walking around and observing, not just asking or via surveys

Continuously gather and act on employee feedback. Conduct surveys or have informal discussions to understand their needs and opinions. Adjust your strategies based on this feedback to ensure your engagement efforts are effective and relevant. Also, foster a culture of collaboration and inclusivity where every employee feels they belong and their contributions matter.
