Knowing what kind of information is needed (or maybe needed) helps in making sure right data sources are setup as well as having a scalable solution.

Ensure the BI solution can manage multiple fact tables and many to many assocations/joins. If it can do this then you will not be constrained by future growth and additional data. Solutions that require the developer to fully know the data model and questions that users will ask in advance can be restrictive and costly (due to lack of agility or rework).

A key thing to success, is to understand the data that you need to have integrated to get the answers you need. The best way to do this is to model it in 3NF in the first instance. 3NF comes with some challenges They are complicated, inflexible and difficult to change, you really understand how your data fits together. How to bypass the challenges? Segment the data don't integrate every item, find homogenous areas, model them and the links between them. Ignore data you don't need. Separate concerns to reduce complexity. This gives a set of pictures that are really understood and extensible and you can choose how to implement them according to your requirements.

Ensure future growth in your BI solution by designing a robust and adaptable data model. Follow best practices like dimensional modeling, utilizing star or snowflake schemas, and applying consistent naming conventions. Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and documentation for accuracy and reliability. Document elements such as definitions, sources, relationships, calculations, and transformations, keeping the model updated as it evolves. A well-designed data model forms the foundation for scalability and flexibility, accommodating the evolving data needs of your business intelligence solution.

As a data model for the best practice for BigQuery, simple denormalized schema instead of snowflake schema using ARRAY and RECORD during the TOC data session. Generally, transformation from typical normalized data model from OLTP data sources to snowflake schema is difficult and time consuming process prior to analyze of data. Without such a burden preprocess, building denormalized schema from OLTP data source is much easier than snowflake schema. For data quality and data lineage, you can use Dataplex on GCP to implement data quality checks and validation rules to ensure accuracy and reliability of your data. Migration of end-to-end data solutions from on-premise to including Cloud SQL, BQ, and Looker on GCP is a common pattern.

Some tips for user friendly dashboard: 1. Do prototyping. Present a non-working prototype to the stakeholders before actual execution 2. Use only 3-4 colors in visuals. Decide primary and secondary colors. 3. Keep legends consistent with colors 4. Do some A/B testing. Try different placement of filters. Try to minimize scrolling up & down 5. Do not overpopulate the pages with huge information. Keep only relevant and correlated visuals 6. Use dynamic and descriptive headers. Use mouseovers efficiently. 7. Use conditional formatting wherever you can

Select suitable chart types, color schemes, and layouts, incorporating labels, titles, legends, and annotations to elucidate data. One of my projects involved creating a dashboard that visualized both team and individual performance. This was particularly significant because performance directly impacted bonuses, a topic often associated with stress. A very crucial point in BI or any other solution design is to make sure its UI/UX is good. It is not just about the design, rather capacity to cater huge audience and yet be flexible to accommodate everyone's requirements.

The overall aspect, clarity, usability, user interface etc are very important, but one aspect that in my experience is often neglected is a real reflection on what specific graph/chart to use based on what narrative and expected outcome. Selecting spaced columns to create a call for action effect, a pie chart for a quick distribution overview makes a huge difference. Similarly, do you want users to look carefully and deep-dive into the figures, or does your audience need a pre-cognitive graph that carries information that can be understood in the blink of an eye, by walking by without stopping? Select a visualization not for its look but for its intended function and effect, the narrative it should carry, its audience and location/support.

I agree. knowing that meaningful data is everything and what’s very important is empowering the users and creating self serve options for them to create data models aligning them rightly to the goals and ensuring monetisation where needed.

Business logic should be capable of accommodating future changes and data models must be kept simple. Data sources and the technology used for building the solution plays an important role in maintaining the solution and its dependency on the future growth of the company.

The paramount of a BI solution si to enable and empower users to do more, self-served BI. This enablement goes hand in hand with a clear and waterproofed set of ground rules (or governance). Balancing enablement and discipline the real success criterion for a well-functioning collaborative model across the organization. It is an ongoing change management process and it is worth remembering that it is more about roles, responsibilities and personas than actual people and boxes in an org. diagram. Usage monitoring is also a valuable indication of whether new development is needed: is the report still useful or does it need to answer new questions, should it be decommissioned, or further optimized for heavier use than originally planned?

To establish a regular and collaborative BI maintenance process, you can use Google Workspace with GCP. You can define and assign roles and responsibilities to members of your BI team with IAM. Cloud Scheduler can schedule and perform data refreshes, backups. Cloud Monitoring can audit, review and evaluate the performance and usage of your BI solution. By these services, you can ensure that your BI solution on GCP is up-to-date, secure, compliant with data policies and standards, and able to deliver value to your business. This will help you stay ahead of the competition and achieve success.

If your stakeholders aren’t comfortable with BI, establish a process that is repeatable and everyone agrees on. For example, maybe they prompt a new project, or you as BI analysts does. Maybe a manager above you solicits work and prioritizes it. But it should be a repeatable comfortable playbook, whatever form it takes.

Which elements of the business shifting would impact margins and revenues the most? These factors are going to influence your choice of current and future dimensions and measures. Thus, they need to be understood widely among the team building this solution. Don’t be afraid to open up this knowledge to your devs. People LIKE to learn and know what’s going on around them. Also have a pm/very engaged sponsor who understands this deeply and can guide development in a way that makes more sense for the business.
