How can you ensure success when seeking a promotion in Management?

LinkedIn: I am not sure it is useful to generalize an approach on management promotion. Every organization has a different system. And often it is less systematic than we would all like. Also: empirically, the winning approach is different for men and women. (Already, women and men of similar qualifications would typically answer this first question differently.) Rather than a system, I would recommend reading and working with proven experts in this matter: @Sally Helgesen; @Marshall Goldsmith and @Wies Bratby.

One way to assess your readiness is to use a psychometric assessment that can help you identify your strengths and areas for improvement, as well as how well you fit the requirements and expectations of the position you are aiming for. Research the job role and the competencies that are required for it. You can look at the job description, talk to your manager or mentor, or review the performance criteria of the current or previous holders of the position. Find out what types of psychometric assessments are used by your organization or industry for promotion decisions. They may include aptitude tests, personality questionnaires, situational judgment tests, or work simulations.

People are promoted or receive compensation increases because of the value they have to the organization. Activity and likeability may get you traction at the beginning of your career but will not be sufficient for further advancement. Determine what the company, department or team's goals are, and how you can best support achieving those. Focus your effort and activities on those things that create value (revenue, cost savings) to the organization. Be a team player. Make others, especially those in more senior roles, look good by helping them to achieve their objectives. And don't ever do this at the expense of others. You can leave them behind, but don't knock them down. Doing so will eventually result in a negative reputation.

When I first started my career, I received some valuable advice that still holds true. The key to career growth is to complete tasks and take on additional responsibilities while ensuring their success. To advance to the next level, the most effective way is to showcase your capabilities through successfully executed projects. In order to do this, you need to analyze your current skills, assess transferable competencies, research the new role, engage in discussions with your leader or those already in the role, participate in training programs, and actively seek out opportunities to undertake real-life projects.

Skills that Shine: Highlight those skills that make you a powerhouse in your field. Whether it's leadership, innovation, or problem-solving, let them see the magic you bring to the table. Craft a Compelling Story: Weave your narrative with a killer resume, a captivating cover letter, and a magnetic elevator pitch. Make it impossible for them to look away! Back It Up with Data: Numbers never lie. Throw in some metrics and data to validate your success. Quantify your achievements and watch your case strengthen. Know your audience – your company and role.
