Start by setting clear security goals for your project. Think about what needs to be protected, like user data or payment information. Make these requirements known to every developer from the start. It's like setting the rules of a game before playing.

From my work on progressive web apps, these are the security requirements I look for: Implement secure authentication mechanisms like OAuth or JWT for user authentication and authorization to access restricted parts of your PWA. Validate all user inputs on the client and server sides to prevent injection attacks such as SQL injection or XSS. If your PWA interacts with backend APIs, ensure that these APIs are secured with appropriate authentication, authorization, and encryption mechanisms. Conduct regular security audits to identify vulnerabilities and apply updates promptly to patch any security flaws. Implement secure error handling to prevent sensitive information leakage in case of errors or exceptions.

Design your project with safety in mind. Use proven methods that help prevent common mistakes. Think of it as building a house; you'd want to use solid blueprints that have worked well in the past.

If you're not sure where to start in testing it's best, at least in regard to web apps, to use unit, API, and end-to-end (e2e) tests. I would recommend looking up the most common technologies used for each in your language, following the docs, and implementing them. For instance, I use Jest and Vitest for unit, Postman for API, and Playwright for e2e. Afterwards, then you can focus on automation so that you don't have to run the tests manually.

When in doubt about security, follow your linter or ask a senior if possible. For example, I had a co-worker whose linter kept telling them that using dangerouslySetInnerHTML was dangerous, but continued to use it to display text since we were using a rich text editor. Needless to say, a hacker was able to access the content management system and do some serious XSS attacks by editing the text that was being dangerously set.

Stay updated on new security threats and solutions. Make security an ongoing effort, not just a one-time task. Think of it as staying fit; it requires continuous effort and adapting to new challenges.
