How can you ensure product backlog aligns with product strategy?

Make your vision as visual and tangible as possible. Ideally you can "feel" and "experience" in your mind what this future looks like with your vision realized. It's super powerful to link your vision to emotions and an aspect of embodiment (rather than just rational descriptions and words). If you can sense what it feels like to live in this future world, you can much more easily identify your first steps there.

Not all customer feedback should directly dictate your backlog. While user needs are important, they shouldn't overshadow your product's strategic direction. Sometimes, you need to say 'no' to certain user requests if they don't align with your long-term vision. Balancing user feedback with strategic direction can lead to a more sustainable and focused product growth.

Leveraging strategic themes to harmonize your backlog with the roadmap is a brilliant strategy. It's analogous to managing a diversified financial portfolio. By categorizing the backlog into themes that directly contribute to your product vision, you can then assess their relative investment impact. Now we enter the discussion of what a roadmap is. Is it THAT high level and long-term that is rather lays out the stepping stones you hypothesis you'd need to jump on to "win the market"? This would require you to think about different target segment-industry-positioning-differentation mixes per stepping stone, and you'd need another tactical planning layer in between. Or is it a rather mid- to short-term planning tool that is focused max. on the year ahead and contains a mix of themes and features? This would need to come before any product backlog discussion. And then yes, they influence each other. With every learning on the backlog level, the roadmap changes, and vice versa.

I don't believe in any "agile roadmap" structure. I believe, a roadmap is as agile as the company as a whole understands and accepts that a roadmap will change based on learnings. Either the roadmap items themselves, or the scope, or the timeline. You can even have a roadmap with dates as long as everybody is aware that it's not a promise but rather planning. Except in heavy B2B. There, you'll also have to make promises on your roadmap. Accept it and move on. More important is that everybody is aligned on the nature of the roadmap, and then on the items and maybe timelines or time horizons.

In my experience,: ?Defining your product goals in an open forum helps ?Create a product roadmap, aligning your management in the meanwhile ?Regularly review and update the product backlog, updating it as per your strategy. ?Communicate and share these updates to all relevant stakeholders. ?Collaborate with your team and stakeholders to gather feedback on the roadmap. Finally : Remember to say no. Don’t let users or management directly dictate what has to go into a product. If you have apropos conviction, discuss this and make sure the the roadmap sticks to the organizational vision and is not just “user needs”

Don't test everything! Only those items that are very risky or you expect a lot of value when shipped but don't have enough data to indicate so, or you have limited budget and need to decide what to spend it on, or you are pre-PMF and want to iterate your way to PMF (but then have a good balance between ship and see vs. test before build).

Teams need to be aligned on the strategy and vision. Great product leaders create this alignment through a clear definition and regular repetition. Only if teams are aligned on the strategy they can create and manage backlog items (and every other activity) accordingly. ??????
