How can you ensure intuitive and consistent navigation as an information architect?

A great question to answer about your user that will later help with how to structure the information, is "What are their goals?". Once the user opens your app, website, or software, what do they want to accomplish and how can you help them achieve that? For example, while working in an LMS for children, their goal is to get to their lesson and learn. So, we added shortcuts to the lessons in the dashboard, and have links to get back to the lesson when they leave to another page. This is just one small example, but defining what your user wants to get done and the steps they'll need to do that will really help in organizing the information in your product. You can even create a whole user journey for it

You can use techniques such as card sorting, tree testing, and sitemaps to create a clear and logical IA that matches your users' mental models and goals. You can also use navigation patterns such as menus, tabs, breadcrumbs, and search to help users access and navigate your IA.

Once at work, I led user interviews to understand their needs and behaviors, using these insights to define our product's information architecture. Yes, there is a law/principle (Jakob’s I believe) in design that discourages reinventing the wheel. There are existing products and standards to help creators and product owners eliminate the need for users to learn to use their products such as e-commerce, fintech, SaaS dashboards etc since there is similar/familiar features/patterns and these patterns reduce time and has already been user tested.

Apple has great documentation on Human Interface Guidelines for best practices in designing with the user's experience in mind first. Material design is a good resource as well, it's a design system developed by Google and they have some explanation on what guided their design choices. I highly recommend browsing through both resources. Learning about industry standards can really elevate not only the visual of your interfaces (make them prettier), but also help the experience of your users. There are many other resources out there and courses geared towards learning design heuristics that are a good way to advancing your UX knowledge

Users are familiar with common user interface patterns, like buttons, checkboxes, and navigation bars. Reducing the learning curve for new interfaces is achieved by utilising these recognisable patterns, which foster comfort and ease of use.

Once at work, I was tasked with redesigning a website's navigation system. I opted to integrate familiar navigation patterns like dropdown menus and search bars. This approach not only sped up the development process but was also well-received by users who found the website intuitive and easy to navigate. From my experience, the use of common symbols and icons plays a key role in facilitating navigation. For instance, the magnifying glass icon for search and the three horizontal lines for the menu (often called the "hamburger menu") are almost universally recognized. I like card sorting because it's basically having the users do the work for you. Give them cards that represent different contents and ask them to group them in ways that make sense. They can also organize the content hierarchically, to give you an idea to what the sitemap could like like. It's possible to do it with online tools, maybe even with a Google Form, so it's a pretty easy way to have user's input from the get go One other thing to mention, is to test different thing separately and not all at once. If the focus is testing the navigation, I recommend not doing it along with visual elements like your wireframes and everything. You can first test whether the information is structured correctly and then later test the interface.

To make sure that navigational improvements are in line with the project's wider objectives and technical viability, gather feedback from a variety of sources.
