Make sure to define the problem you are trying to solve, people involved (I recommend using RASCI), the implications of that problem in a short, medium and long term. The better you define the problem, the smoothest it will be to keep things on track. In addition, it's essential to keep record of a good and complete documentation, so if anyone has any questions they should go first to the documentation, and no other document should be used as primary source. This helps you align people to the general goal and remind them of where the correct source of information is!

But the business problem should require its on special solution. Then you can adapt once you analyze the data. Requirements can snowball easily if you don't solidify them upfront.

I like the CRISP-DM approach which gives some high level overview of what you need to do. It's old but gold.

This will help identify the timeline, needs and project demands including applications, tools, models required to complete the project. This gives you a general overview of how to complete the project, when the project will be completed and who is responsible for what.
